Melissa Suzanne Highsmith disappeared on August 23, 1971, when she was just 1 year and 9 months old. Her mother, Alta, had placed an ad in the newspaper for a babysitter, and received a phone call from someone who called herself Ruth Johnson. When Ruth Johnson arrived to pick up Melissa on the morning of August 23, Alta had already gone to work and left Melissa in the care of her roommate. The roommate met with Ruth Johnson, and handed Melissa over to her along with some diapers and Melissa's pink dress and white sandals. Johnson never returned with Melissa.
