About Me

The riddim. And the neverending discourse of self-appointed and sometimes self-defeating professors talking around issues. These are the roots of this here Academia. After Frattacchio introduced Bob Marley in his Y-10 playlist in the late nineties, reggae's been an integral part of the Academia's day-to-day struggle to survive. Spika Biugi and Biolo produced their first reggae song, Cinder Rain, in 2003, and since then the Academia's music has travelled to Switzerland, the States, France, Australia, and back its home in the wasteland of Savona, Italy. Torn between the love for reaggae and the inability (and unwillingness) to see a god in the last emperor of Ethiopia, The Riddim Academia is somewhat out of the stereotypical reggae (where, too often, people quote other people who were quoting yet other people who where in turn quoting the bible) and guaranteed to go beyond the usual, easy, depressing mimicking of roots reggae by upper-middle-class, rebel-till-25 boys. The tracks on this page are only demos. But at least they're here. It's the least we can do, as a group of people playing reggae. The gipsy-like wanderings of Spika Biugi (currently based in Brisbane, Australia) have made it hard, so far, for the band to establish itself with live shows and also to spend sufficient time recording as an ensemble. Nonetheless, the Academia's first album is due out in Autumn 2007...

Band Members: Spika Biugi receives songs from the Whole and writes them down, sings lead and backing vocals and makes noises, makes beats, plays guitars and even other instruments that he can't really play. It's tiring. Biolo is going to play bass guitars and keyboards in the final versions of the songs. Schiena might also be playing guitars on the album.
Influences: Bob Marley, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Dydymos Judas Thomas, Peter Tosh, Culture, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Max Romeo, Augustus Pablo, Linton Kwesi Johnson, the early Jimmy Cliff, Africa Unite
