Are you out there Thisbe?

About Me

As near as I can tell, I want to be Buckaroo Banzai when I grow up. (Or perhaps I should say, 'if I grow up.' Sometimes I think I'm a grown up, and sometimes I think I'm an adult, but I'm pretty sure the two are two different things, and I'm pretty sure I'm not both. But I'm usually one or the other. what would you call a guy who hasn't called in sick to work in years, but who plays bass in a rock band?) (As a stray thought on the whole growing up/getting older subject; I'm also pretty sure that most of what most people think of as growing old is really just giving up.)Sometimes I call myself a warrior poet. You can learn all about me at davidharrisgriffith.com . If you want the nutshell version... I am a writer, a photographer, a martial artist, a runner and a musician. On occasion I can be a raconteur. MyGen Profile Generator

My Interests

In no particular order....I play bass guitar. (my band, The Whisper Garden ( whispergarden.com )was proud to be in WKQQ's 2005 Decent Exposure contest.) We have been playing around since Halloween 2004. One of our more intersting gigs was opening for the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Kentucky Theatre. Our strangest gig, without a doubt, was at the Picnic for the Pups, where we followed a Bluegrass band and a dog show. (Do you have any idea how hard it is to follow a series of dogs in costume? Or how hard it is to play while looking at a dog dyed bright yellow?) More information about the band can be found at our website http://whispergarden.com .I write. My greatest accomplishment so far has been a novel: The Whisper Garden. (Before you ask, the Band is named after the novel. More specifically, the band is named after a song written about the novel.) information about the novel can be found at http://whispergarden.com .I consider myself to be a fairly decent photgrapher. (a few images are up at davidharrisgriffith.com .)I learn. (about all sorts of things)I practice (and teach) martial arts... specifically Shao Lym Ryu kung fu http://members.aol.com/ukkarateclub/ (I don't think I realized how many pages I maintain until I started editing this profile.)If you want to learn more about me, my new, really spiffy web page can be found at http://davidharrisgriffith.comI'd really appreceate a few good votes on my TSO contest entry. .. width="425" height="350" ..

I'd like to meet:

Someone who understands my Buckaroo Banzai reference... Someone who fits into the rather oddly shaped hole in my life, but who has a life of their own. I don't want a doormat. Someone who is intelligent and physically active. Someone who has pursuits. Someone who walks the fine line between boring and scary.I like artists, (martial artists, painters, photographers, sculptors...) writers, musicians, philosophers, thinkers, doers, be-ers, beers...

Music:

yes please... I like music...My rule of thumb is that as long as the musicians are playing what they want to be playing (as opposed to simply what someone is paying them to play) I will probably like it.

Movies:

In no particular order, some of my favorites. The usual suspects. LA Confidential. Conan the Barbarian. Buckaroo Banzai. Enter the Dragon. KY Fried Movie (epsecially viewed back to back with Enter the Dragon) to Catch a Thief. Blade Runner. The Crow. Casablanca. In general I like movies that get some adrenalin flowing, or that make me laugh. I like movies that make me think, but I don't like movies that make me sad. (Sad is one of those emotions I just don't enjoy... and not liking being sad means that I don't like a lot of movies that would make me think. Why is it that when people make interesting movies they feel so compelled to make them depressing?)

Television:

I don't remember the last time I turned the TV on to watch anything that was broadcast. (DVDs are another matter, but they don't really count as TV do they?) A few years ago I was very fond of the Friday night lineup... Strange Luck, the X files, American Gothic. I would tape the shows and watch them at 4 AM when I got home from work. Two out of three of those shows only lasted one season.

Books:

Just about anything by Carl Hiassen. Elmore Leonard. Roger Zelazney. Robert Crais. Lawrence Shames. H.P. Lovecraft. Robert E Howard. Stephen King. Etc.

Heroes:

Bass wise, when I grow up I'd like to be Derek Smalls or John Entwhistle. In the world of writing I am a huge fan of Stephen King, Carl Hiassen, Elmore Leonard, Dave Barry, And Roger Zelazney. (It is one of my fondest hopes to someday be good enough to combine two dreams and be a back-up bassist for the Rock Bottom Remainders.)

My Blog

Old School.

So a couple of weeks ago I picked up a copy of the Beastie Boys first album. only 25 years or so after it was released. I remember the first time I heard anything from it: I was in a record store, and...

Private thoughts and confessions

So what is the point of a private blog entry? A blog, by its very nature,  is a public thing. What is the point of posting an intriguing title and then not letting anyone see the content? Isn't i...

Good sign? Bad sign?

In case you didn't know, I have written a novel, which I am trying to sell. A couple of weeks ago I revised my query packet, and sent out a stack to literary agents. (This was far from my first round...

Gambling

It started with a discussion about poker. "I don't gamble with my money," my friend asserted. "Poker isn't gambling," I replied. The converstaion was soon interupted and therefor went unfinished. Poss...

Pretty & poison

I was mowing one of my fields, and I was feeling pretty bad about it because the field was full of beauty. The Queen Anne's Lace is probably the most prolific flower in the field, but there are wildfl...

Out of the flying pan, into the mire

Inside my brain...

So what does it say about me that through a string of associations I found myself thinking about the works of  Eadweard Muybridge. (heck, what does it say about me that I know who he was?) (in ca...
