Raw honesty and strength are the best words to describe Petra Luna's singing and writing style. She is a commanding live performer who can make anyone relate to her and her messages. Able to sing in any style, as well as in 7 languages, she is an incredibly diverse talent. Her preferred style is Latin, Hip Hop Rock and Pop that she sings in English and Spanish. Her voice is strong, sultry and intoxicating and she has the power to move her listeners like a true diva.
Petra Luna was born in Central Illinois to a Spanish/Mexican father and an Irish/English mother. Petra's first musical influences were the dance and rock styles of the 70s and 80s. She started singing at the age of 16 in her car.
Petra joined her first professional bands singing Jazz, Dance, Gospel, Blues and Rap and began her songwriting career. She concluded her education with a Bachelor with Honors Degree in Vocal Performance and Audio Production/Engineering from Columbia College in Chicago.
After college, Petra met Roberto Roth and Hayssam Boumoujahed who owned a 16 track-recording studio at the time. She persuaded them to allow her to buy into the business. She worked as an assistant engineer and pre-production writer for the studio's clients. She also engineered and produced her first demo tapes at that time. Petra even volunteered as musical director for the now well-known children's television show "The Happiness Club", and wrote a song about homeless people for the show. Roth, being the first to record and develop Petra's studio voice, soon persuaded German Producer Adam Schairer to record and release her first dance single on the major, European label Bellaphon. After 2 years, Petra left the studio to become a full time professional working singer. She also developed a lucrative modeling career. Roth also left the studio and returned to his homeland of Germany. (There he worked with Dieter Deirks, producer for the Scorpions, and Connie Plank, producer forthe Eurythmics, Annie Lennox.) Petra joined Roth in Germany to record her second dance single "Whatever" for the European label, Manifold/ Compile Records. The single sold over 20,000+ units and received extensive airplay throughout Europe. While over seas, Petra visited Spain where she fell in love with her heritage and Latin music. She chose a new stage name "PETRA LUNA" meaning moon rock in Spanish for her strength and nocturnal nature.
Her debut album, self-titled "Petra Luna" was also recorded in Germany. Along with Roth she co-produced her CD's songs with some of Germany's finest musicians, Peter B. Herrmann (Harold Faltermayer, Frank Farian, gold single and platinum album for Claudia Jung, EMI Records and Izabel Varel, BMG Records) and team Ray Clarke and Eric Del Mar (Warner Brothers, 2YX and Edel Records). Petra's first CD was released in America on Novo Records. To promote her first CD, she formed a popular all female singing/dancing group. They did radio show interviews, gained airplay for the CD and toured the Midwest for 3 years collecting a loyal regional following.
In 2000 Petra's life fell apart when she discovered her ex-fiancé severely abusing his children. As she struggled to have him convicted, he committed suicide. Broken, inspired and eager to record again, Petra started writing songs pertaining to domestic abuse with producer M Doc (Madonna, C.C. Peniston, Michael Jackson, Maverick/Warner Brothers, A& M, Sony and Indasoul Records sponsored by Coke). Roth had moved to Los Angeles and was working for producer Jerry Jackson, (The Staple Singers, The Temptations, Peabo Bryson, Dance Mania, Kayne West, Twister, Snoop Dog, Sting, La Face Records, Mary J. Blidge, The Marley Family and Spinderella from Salt & Pepper) owner of "Smooth Sounds Studio" in Van Nuys, CA. Roth helped persuade Jackson to take an interest in Petra's project.
After signing a Production Deal with the studio, Petra packed her bags, moved west and started recording her second CD titled "Empowerment". While recording, Petra also assembled a new improved group of dancer/singers and for 2 1/2 years the group performed for the "live LA scene circuit", as well as for live radio and television programs serving the Pacific Southwest. In 2006 Petra started up a music publishing company with Jackson and is now learning the ropes of that business as she promotes her new CD. Petra still performs concerts to promote her "Empowerment" CD upon request.
Seeing how her music dealing with abuse was impacting her listeners, Petra decided to become even more dedicated to her cause. To follow in the footsteps of artists like John Lennon and Marvin Gay and become a musician with a real message for humanity. The new CD she is writing, to be titled "At War" is to be record dealing with her personal war she has declared on DOMESTIC ABUSE. She hopes to someday start a new non-for-profit organization in the future that will help to protect, educate and aid domestic abuse victims.. Petra Luna
