About Me

When Shanty Plus sings there is a texture that you can almost touch, a surreal beauty that is boundless. Shanty started singing at the age of six in his family church choir in the parish of Manchester, Jamaica. As a youth, he built his first drum set from plastic containers and cans, and would play these drums as he sings. At the age of eleven, Shanty entered a song and DJ contest in Mandeville, and walked away with first-place and the insight that he was meant to be a singer. After a wildly successful performance in Portland, in 1994, Shanty decided to focus on his development as a singer. From his first reggae single titled ..That's the way Life Goes to his latest You Got Me; Shanty has recorded many songs including the popular Moving East (dubbed; Tired of the West Indies), on the Lalabella album. He has worked with reggae music industry's notables including performing on tour with Luciano and Dean Frazer. Shanty's country vibes, mixed with his church upbringing lends a spiritual intensity to his voice, which is also evident in his life. He credits his mother as his mentor. The teachings of Haile Selassie I dictate his life choices. His inspiration comes from Bob Marley, and his hero is Garnett Silk. His greatest achievement is recognizing that his mission in life is to do his Creator's work. The human quality most influential in shaping the way he lives is tolerance. Currently, Shanty is finishing his first full album -- Boundless, where he has created the lyrics and melodies, and has arranged, directed and performed the songs. Shanty gives thanks every day for those that continue to encourage him. Shanty's music easily attracts the spiritual minded with appeal across cultural lines.
