The Glasgow singer/ songwriter is at one moment touchingly sad and broken, the next ballsy and angry. Think of a grown up Lilly Allen. A Lie is a laid-back and jazzy torch song, while the piano led Does It Get Easier? is a superb break-up song mixing smoky jazz with rock rhythms and wail of a violin. It also boasts the lyrics "I can watch the dust settle on our love". Now that’s poetry.†Daily Record“Her smoky vocals are perfectly suited to the old world glamour of Club Noir†The List“Bittersweet piano-driven songs with a dramatic edge†The List“Acclaimed singer/songwriter†Evening Times“Her melodies ooze atmosphere and whisky-filled melancholy - simply can’t be missed.†smallfish-online.net"A creditable set from an emerging artist." The Skinny“Raw intimacy, alluring vocals and warm musical sounds paint a picture of love’s highs and lows.†havemousewillclick.com“The production is superb and it sounds as though the Kronos Quartet have been roped in for backing. Her sweet vocals and sumptuous melody hark of a bygone era. In fact for just a moment I imagined myself as a spy in wartime Paris sitting in a café listening†crookedrain.co.uk~ ~ ~Frustrated with spells in various Glasgow punk bands as the ‘token cute chick’ singing other people’s music, and with a wealth of experience promoting grass-roots level gigs at Glasgow’s 13th Note and Nice & Sleazy, Lou Hickey applied a go-it-alone DIY ethic to a background of classical training, a university degree in music, and singing with jazz and swing bands. The result of these two very different worlds colliding was the self-written, self-engineered and self-produced album ‘New Shoes’.This debut combines the influence of her jazz background with the indie attitude of a 23-year-old punk fan resulting in a collection of “bitter-sweet piano driven songs with a dramatic edge†(The List) with subtle jazz influences which are combined with lyrics full of wit and attitude that pull no punches in chronicling the failings of friends and the darker side of relationships.December 10th sees the release of the second self-produced EP from Lou Hickey, entitled ‘Do It Yourselfâ€. Four songs ranging from bitter-sweet piano driven drama to beguiling jazz-influenced tongue in cheek pop, with a dash of retro pin-up glamour.Lead track ‘One Man Tango’ was inspired by Lou’s experiences as a key member of Glasgow-based burlesque phenomenon Club Noir, where she sings and performs an alternative cabaret act as her burlesque alter ego ‘Loulabelle La Voixâ€.From early acoustic gigs with cellist Susan Appelbie (currently working with Biffy Clyro), to the current full band line up with vocals, piano, trumpet cello, bass and drums, Lou Hickey’s recent shows have included Indian Summer 2007, Big In Falkirk, King Tuts, Glasgow Academy, the Old Fruitmarket, the Jam House, the Arches, Tron theatre, Musicworks, Glasgow International Jazz Festival, support slots with Suzanne Vega, Clem Snide, Fields, Mumm-Ra, the Cat Empire, Martha Wainwright, Hafdis Huld, and in August 2007 playing London’s Pigalle club supporting jazz chanteuse and Leonard Cohen’s co-writer and muse, Anjani.Club Noir - now one of the largest events of its kind in the world - has featured Lou Hickey as their headline musical guest on three occasions, keeping such illustrious company as the Puppini Sisters. Separately, as Loulabelle La Voix, she is also a fully fledged member of the cabaret troupe, and has performed with them at T in the Park 2007, Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2007, Belladrum Tartan Heart 2007 and Connect 2007 festival.More recently in October 2007, Lou Hickey was crowned ‘Artist by a panel of industry insiders at King Tut’s ‘Your Sound’ showcase event. This was only shortly after XFM Scotland listeners voted her top in the XFM new artist exposure poll. As well as a healthy MySpace following, Lou has been heard on BBC Scotland, XFM Scotland, Sunny Govan, Central FM, Forth FM and Q96 radio and she has also performed live in session on BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘Jazz House’ Show.
