A good song is a song that means a special something to the listener. A truly great song is one that crosses generations and styles, and still remains special – whether a full- blown epic production, or simply a “tin-pan alley†one instrument, one voice performance.
Throughout the decades, certain songs have stood out and surpassed the test of time. Songs from the jazz era, swing, rock and roll, heavy rock – even mass produced pop songs – have done just that, stood out and become respected “standards†in an ever-changing musical environment. Sadly, there is one genre of music that always gets overlooked… Punk!
Popular culture, and to some degree musical snobbery, simply dismissed punk as nothing more than a three chord bash - loud, aggressive, unrefined and firmly of the “anyone can play†variety.
In this (the first in a planned series of CD’s) PUNK’D attempt to set the record straight, and demonstrate unequivocally that, although often lost in an era of misunderstood lyrics, chaos and musical anarchy, some truly great songs did emerge from the punk years. In much the same way as pupils of potential academic genius now languish in under funded state schools, outstanding songs - written by extraordinarily talented writers - went greatly unnoticed in the late 70’s due to a media storm only interested in “the filth and the furyâ€.
Songs such as “Ever Fallen In Love†(the Buzzcocks) – a beautiful and deeply touching love song – made even more poignant when given a very melodic, and almost classical treatment by PUNK’D. This song now takes pride of place alongside other great love songs of the 20th century.
The haunting and eerily prophetic lyrics of “God Save The Queen†(Sex Pistols) emerge as a testimony to the writing genius of John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) and, in this 2007 re-working, have even more impact than ever…
“…Made you a moron, a potential H bomb…â€
With Britain now breeding homegrown suicide bombers, reinventing poverty for millions and totally losing its identity, it still continues to buy into a traditional and completely out of touch monarchy. The outcome is as clear as it was in 1977…
“…No future…No future for you…â€
The musical complexity of Elvis Costello’s “Oliver’s Army†(hardly a three chord bash!) lends itself perfectly to a vocal driven, carefully layered and almost operatic ensemble piece. Coupled with devilishly satirical lyrics (again, very poignant today - with current global military uncertainty) this superb song now hits the target with even more accuracy than ever.
Although, perhaps, a lesser-known punk classic, “Too Drunk To Fuck†(Dead Kennedys), compliments this collection perfectly. Once despised, revered and considered simply an excuse for an outrageous lyric, now – given a classic swing/jazz treatment – demonstrates its wicked humour and a definite “tongue-in-cheek†appeal. Borrowing heavily from The Stray Cats “Strut†this is a version you will want to hear again and again, and is impossible not to love.
