Herrera & The Handouts

A HANDOUT FROM A CHEEPSKATE

About Me

Originally released on Midnight Records in the late fall of 1989, this album by former Cheepskates guitarist David John Herrera featured an All-Star cast of NYC Garage/Psych musicians. Using Orin Portnoy (Outta' Place, Optic Nerve) on bass along with drummer Bob Baker, the players on the tracks listed above are as follows:-----------------------------------------------1. "Some Folks" - Elan Portnoy of the Fuzztones on dueling lead guitars. Sandy Vogel on backing vocals. -----------------------------------------------2. "Frog Booth" - Jon Weiss of the Vipers on sax along with Dino Sorbello of the Mad Violets supplying feedback and sound effects. ------------------3. "Your Chance" - Tony Matura of the Optic Nerve on 1st lead guitar. Bobby Belfiore of the Optic Nerve on slide guitar. Christian on 2nd lead guitar. ------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------4. "Party" - Mike Miraconda of the Raunch Hands on fiddle and steel guitar. ------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------5. "I Don't Want You To Go" - Shane Faubert of the Cheepskates ..boards and backing vocals. This song was written by the Horrible Flowers (J. Weir/P. Wilkerson), an obscure band that Herrera was in before the Cheepskates. ---------------------------------------------------------6. "Manic Depression," a Jimi Hendrix song (which is not on the LP) performed at a Handouts show on 2/10/90.------------------------------------Other tracks on the album include Michael Chandler (Outta' Place, Raunch Hands) on Harmonica. Grec Pekorsky (Uncle Sydney) on lead guitar. The Optic Nerve on backing vocals. And Steve Marshall on lead guitar. Herrera played all of the instruments on three of the tracks and penned nine of the thirteen (original) songs. Of the other four tunes, one was written by Tony Matura, two by Jackson Weir III, and one (as previously mentioned) by the Horrible Flowers.---------------------------------------------------- ---------------Seven days after this site was launched, an article about this album was posted on the "Lost In Tyme Blog". Sounds Like: Original (Cheepskates) guitarist indulges his dual fascinations - spacey, Santana-styled jamming and British blues - on his solo LP. If you can bypass the fact that he has nothing even resembling a singing voice, you'll find his fluid playing more attuned to the former (as evidenced by "Frog Booth"). John Borack - Trouser Press
Record Label: None, make me an offer.
