FAN LETTERS FOR PALEFACE

Howdy Paleface!

I got something I have to get off my chest cause its been in the back and front of my mind for a long time and now finding out you're still making music and actually have two websites I can tell you. When I was 12 or 13 years old around 1995 living in Iuka Mississippi I was just venturing out into the non-mainstream thanks to my older sister who was into having penpals, zines and mixtapes, demos and homemade music sent to her in the mail which I enjoyed far more than she did.

We were always on the lookout for something that looked homemade and original so one day she was at a yard sale in Tishomingo and found a Motley Crue cassette with half of the label scratched away on side 1 and PALEFACE written over it with a black marker (lots of times people would send their bands demos recorded over other bands pro-pressed tapes), the old lady who was having the yard sale gave it up for free. She brought it back home and told me she found a funny tape by this guy called Paleface. We listened to it and Burn And Rob started up my sister got a days worth of chuckles out of it, said it was awful and gave it to me like she did with all her good stuff. It had to have the whole Burn And Rob album on it now that I know better but it took up both sides of Motley Crue tape.

I absolutely loved it, that tape got me through my whole puberty which was horrific, and got me more into playing an acoustic guitar, singing and having a boombox around to record and just urgh! It inspired musical choices such as recording the sound of cars passing, using kitchen utensils for percussion, stream of conscious lyrics, again I type URGH! When faced with some situations in life my mind would sometimes go back to a Paleface lyric for advice. Its a major album to me and it had a Jandek like mysteriousness to it for years. There was no internet, no music mags or zines or any way to find out about Paleface, no one we asked knew anything.

Me and my sister were convinced Paleface was some guy who recorded tapes on a boombox in Tishomingo County Mississippi and when he moved out of his mom's house he left it there and mom not knowing what her son did with his spare time put it in her yard sale. Or it could have been a tape a guy recorded just for his girlfriend and she left it when she moved, I was always making up shit in my head about Paleface. This went on for YEARS! I wore that tape down to its breaking limits and my mom hated it, I mean I played that damn thing constantly. I never knew the song titles or anything about it and I'm sure I told everyone who caught me playing it that "I dunno who this is, some guy recorded this in his bedroom here in Tish, I got lots of bedroom tapes etc etc"

Whenever I first got around the internet the very first thing I looked up was Paleface. BAM! No information at all!

I found the Get Off album used on amazon.com or cdnow.com or one of those music sites and it was the only thing listed for a long time, I bought that over the net and thought it wasn't the same guy that did that tape I had until I listened to it enough to think differently. After that my life got extremely hectic, awful and I went through what I call "second puberty" being 16-24, though it lasts longer for other people, drinking and smoking too much and being in a total state of disarray playing in sarcastic death metal AND hardcore punk bands (though always listening to all kinds of music, in fact I'm currently writing more old timey blues style music and working on my Beefheart/Howlin Wolf singing). Well now I've fucked up so bad I'm back at my mom's house in Mississippi for a bit I just remembered Paleface again and found you on the internet making new music, shit you're going on tour!
