Belgium:
Last month the announcement of a short European tour by Vicious Rumors came completely out of the blue. Those familiar with this legendary US band centered around Geoff Thorpe all know that in the late eighties they produced some high quality metal albums which sound still timeless to this day. So dancing pub Twieoo in Ghent was completely filled with leather jackets on this Wednesday evening for this exclusive Benelux gig.
But first Belgian’s Native Instinct had the task to warm us up. Ex-Crossfire Rudi van de Sijpe (guitar) founded this power metal quintet six years ago and since then the line-up has changed quite a bit. But know it seems they finally found a steady formation although their live performance still shows room for some improvement. Most songs came from their new album which is due within the next months and while the skills are clearly present the songs lacked a bit in variety.
German outfit Courageous didn’t ring a bell with this here scribbler in spite of the fact that they have been working for 8 years on the road to metal stardom. As a result of this hard work they sounded as a tight unit yet failed to whet my musical appetite. And adding covers of ‘Yellow Submarine’ (Beatles) and even ‘You Only Live Twice’ (from …Vicious Rumors) weren't exactly good choices in my book.
With the empty space before the tiny stage now being filled it was clear everybody came to see only one band. A pity however that the announced Brad Gillis (Night Ranger) failed to make the trip at the last minute due to family commitments. But Thaen Rasmussen-although inconspicuous-did more than a decent job replacing him. With opening tracks ‘Digital Dictator’, ‘Minute To Kill’ and ‘Down To The Temple’,Vicious Rumors took off in full speed setting the place immediately on fire. Currently the band is in the studio recording their new album ‘Sonic Rebellion’ (due for a September release) and this short European visit with only three dates was a welcome break. Naturally they tried out some new songs which can all be filed under the same musical banner from Vicious Rumors. Founder Geoff Thorpe is without a doubt the main man within this unit but it was new lead singer James Rivera who made the biggest impression on me tonight. This Helstar and ex-Seven Witches frontman has a ! pure metal voice that can easily switch from low to high in just a second. Something he demonstrated on more than one occasion. With only one encore ‘On The Edge’ they closed this short but tight set which was a nice trip down memory lane
Germany:
Incredibly were stretched to all persons present on the new Line up by VICIOUS RUMORS. Unfortunately, the volume announced new beginning with famous musicians and/or old friends only half was to be seen from on the homepage. The former OZZY/NIGHTRANGER guitarist Brad Gillis was as prevented as a certain Dave Starr, his sign, actually, old bassist by VR. More first had to do good and it was not, therefore, abkömmlich. The history then already with the bassist was more strangely. This probably stood already at the airport and found out there that his identity card / passport has run off long since and he might not leave therefore the land. As a substitute in the guitar a young man was engaged which at least externally like Mark McGees a little younger brother looked.Above all he shone beside clean play with that the classical 80th poodle's hairstyle. Unfortunately, the name of the man has been cancelled me. Sorry! In the bass might Larries colleague Steve from his Metallica-! cover tape come on and made good his thing properly. Otherwise might be applauded already mentioned Larry Howe in the drums and song God James Rivera (HELSTAR, DESTINYS, DISTANT THUNDER). Above all the return of comedian Larry back in the shoot the volume, is good for the mood incredibly. The man is simply pure entertainer and also brings the verbittertsten man in his mid-forties still to grin. However, with the good James there were also sceptical voices to hear whether he fits with his unconventional song style really to this tape. Then, however, it also already went off.
One could not choose a better entrance than the Intro and the title track of " Digitally Dictator “. To orders only classics became 80%. The rest were new tracks. Unfortunately, one limited himself with the classics, however, only on songs of the albums „ Digitally Dictator “, "Vicious Rumors" and "Welcome To The Ball". Unfortunately, the debut as well as the overriding work „ Word Of Mouth were left blank. The reasons lay here, however, in the too short time around the songs einzuproben. Only James Rivera had rehearsed after own statement at most twice with the volume. One marked this to the little one with the big voice also now and then, because he was, nevertheless, of the more often by his applications briefly too late in it.
But here, otherwise, he done a more than worthy job. With "Abandoned", „ minute To Doing in “ or "Down To The Temple" one could hear with his spiritual eye even Carl Albert (R.I.P.) again on the stage if one closed his honest Glubscher once. He had problems with the song lines of among the rest „ Lady Took A of the chance “ which came along with an extremely cool bass and Around Solo. Then one could also hear three new songs. Once already as a demo song "Immortal" (not thus the bringer) and two brand-new songs confessed (one does not ask me please for name!) with which one could do the influence of the new Line ups unambiguously heraushören. The classical VR-Songwriting hits on final song lines DESTINYS.
Whether this mixture meets the nerve of the listeners or one must agree with the sceptics, we will notice in the period August / October if the new album on the market comes. Otherwise remains to mention that might also cowarble with the VR version of "You Only Live Twice" Chris von COURAGEOUS with on the stage to and, nevertheless, the set from the mentioned problems with briefly one hour was surely short. In spite of all wideren circumstances a reminiscent-worthy evening.
Appreciatively I would like to mention at this point also the bartender of the evening, which both tapes an excellent, clear sound hinzauberte, which also exactly the right one Box of volume drove up Against it one would have to take away from the DJ, however, the license for putting on. The fact that one does the people to the exits with a 90%th Oldschool interest in the audience if one plays rap Metal directly after the concert, would have had to be clear to him. Thus the store was empty within 15 minutes yawning.
However, the preventer area the volume was not empty by far. The calling cards were handed round as if one played maps, there were fraternization scenes without end. It was smoked, drunk and numerous anecdotes from more than twenty years of Metal were exchanged. Thus it was celebrated till the early morning hours as if one was a newcomer in the 80th. This tape hopefully really comes once more on the legs. They would have earned it.
