The Coro delle mondine di Novi is an all-female, 20-strong choir.
All of its members hail from Novi di Modena, a village in the lowlands of Emilia Romagna, in northern Italy. The older among them, now in their eighties, worked in the rice paddies and experienced the hardships and the struggles of the wartime period, including active support for the Resistance against the Nazi occupation of northern Italy in 1943-1945.
After rice weeding was replaced by chemistry-intensive agriculture in the early 70s, the former rice weeders from Novi formed a choir and continued to sing their worksongs for the enjoyment of the music.
While they learned most of the songs of their repertoire in the rice paddies, over time the choir drew new strength from younger women. Firstly from the rice weeders’ own daughters, that were recruited into the choir in the 80s;
more recently Fiamma Fumana brought to this story the contribution of yet another generation, that of young girls of the present age, giving rise to an electro-folk music female group that spans across three generations.
Rice weeders – From Mother to Daughter (Mondine – Di madre in figlia)
is the provisional title for a documentary film (DV, 55’) that will tell the tale of the choir of Novi.
The documentary, directed by Andrea Zambelli and produced by Rossofuoco s.a.s., is intended for TV viewing and for DVD and Homevideo formats. A cinema version is also being considered.
The film will tell the tale of their work in the paddies, their wartime years, ther times of joy and struggle, their songs and how these songs were preserved across the decades, forgotten by most;
it will also be about the recent surge of new interest in this part of the Italian musical heritage, fueled by the commitment of Fiamma Fumana to pass it on to the new generations.
The film will also show the choir and Fiamma Fumana “on the road†as they travel to reach audiences that know little or nothing about the world their songs evoke:
they plan to take part in the great Labour Day concert in Rome (May 1st 2007), and to tour America in the fall of 2007.
The journeys to perform for generationally, culturally, geographically distant audiences represents for these ladies the chance to share their experiences out of their local community, linked to the globalised world.
