In 1993 I was elected as Labor's new State Parliamentary Leader. From 1993 to 1999 I, with the overwhelming support of the Melbourne community, worked to restore Labor's fortunes in Victoria.Steve Bracks, having won the state election called by Kennett in September 1999, appointed me as Minister for Finance, Assistant Treasurer and Minister for State and Regional Development.Fulfilling a campaign promise, Steve Bracks became Treasurer as well as Premier, greatly assisted by me. As was the natural order of things, in May 2000 I was appointed State Treasurer.Since 2000 I have presided over a period of increasing growth and prosperity in Victoria, and my personal economic management was given all of the credit for Labor's landslide re-election in 2002.I am widely acknowledged as the most feared and respected politician ever to grace the Victorian Parliament. As such, I am now the Premier.
