I started singing at the age of nine, opening for all the freestyle singers in the 90's like, Brenda K. Starr, Debbie Gibson, Coro and many others. I always wanted to be an R&B singer but BOY OH BOY did my dad change that for me! I would wake up to him playing the Conga's and blasting the music at 7 am! AHHHH! The salsa just grew in me, I can't explain it! When I met the guys (Los Hermanos Colon) they gave me the opportunity to record a song in their album (Cuando Una Mujer) which my friend Irma Pagan help me choose. This opportunity changed my life forever!
I was like an addict I WANTED MORE AND MORE.... For years, I was too young to sing Salsa (Whatever) but I never gave up. My dad (Julio Ceasar Marchena) is my inspiration he would always tell me "You are a salsera no matter what!" and I believe him.
Going back I can remember hanging out with my dad in venues full of musicians all in which shared theirs talents, whether it was playing an instrument, singing or soniendo they were talented! My dad would play the congas with his Palo Viejo on the side and I would sit by him and think he was crazy when his hands would start bleeding from banging on the leather of the conga so much but he would NEVER stop. His friends would come over and play a new cassette, then argue with my dad about who is better than who, it was hilarious! By then I started voicing my opinion and debating about salsa singers, they would all turn around and look at me like WHAT?! LOL! But I did and still do. My dad passed in 2004 and my whole world changed.
I can't give up now, I have to keep doing what he and I both loved doing and that is KEEPING THE SALSA ALIVE! I remember hearing stories about how concerts and festivals use to be back in the days and only WISH things can be that way again. I have faith too someday leave a mark in the salsa industry and I hope you all will be there to support me! Because La Salsa Vive En Mi Sangre!
The songs you are about to listen to was an opportunity I was given by a very dear friend of mine Steve Sklany whom sponsored me, The project was never completed due to my fathers health but it will always be my VERY 1st recording as a Soloist. I began looking for producers and with the help of my family (LHC, Wichy Camacho, Papo Pepin and more) we decided on Rene Leyva, a GREAT producer/arranger/pianist in NJ. Rene Leyva has arranged, performed and/or produced for such artists as Marc Anthony ("Necesito Amarte Mas"),Frankie Negron ("Echame A Mi La Culpa"/ "Overjoyed") Ray Sepulveda ("Para Siempre"), Conjunto Imagen ("Always & Forever"/"Tears On My Pillow"/"My,My,My") Miosotis ("Senora"), Los Hermanos Moreno ("Tengo"),Los Hermanos Colon ("Natural"/"Para Amar A Una Mujer"/"I Swear") to name a few... I feel honored to have worked with such a pioneer, and look forward to working with him in the future.
