TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT (1944)The Trailer for "To Have and Have Not"
To Have and to Have Not Trailer
"You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve?" This is a short excerpt of the "whistle" scene from "To Have and Have Not." Bogie had finally met his match with this 19-year-old newcomer. As they fell in love during the filming of this movie, it's obvious that Bacall took Bogie's breath away... and he never really got it back."It's even better when you help." This is a longer excerpt of the famous "whistle" scene. It's followed by a vintage Warner Brothers cartoon parody of the same scene ("Bacall to Arms" 1946). I love how the artists exaggerate the smoldering nature of Slim."There are no strings tied to you.... not yet." When you look like Slim, you don't have to carry around your own matches and cigs.

Add to My Profile | More Videos"The other times, you're just a stinker." Some clever YouTube patron put together the following video of some of the best lines delivered by Lauren Bacall in "To Have and Have Not." Use with caution... results may vary.
Bacall sings "Am I Blue?" with Hoagy Carmichael. This is a charming scene.
Slim sings "How Little We Know" at the piano with Hoagy Carmichael. Bogie is so smitten he can barely light his cigarette. This is a gorgeous montage of clips from "To Have and Have Not" set to "You Don't Know Me" performed by one of my favorites... Michael Buble.THE BIG SLEEP (1946)Trailer for "The Big Sleep""I hope the Sergeant never traces that call."
The screenplay for "The Big Sleep" is one of the wittiest in the genre. Case in point, the phone call to the police station...."I don't like your manners." This is the first meeting between Marlowe and Ms. Rutledge. There's some great dialogue here, but don't push it, Marlowe. Pointing out the "lunch in a bottle" probably isn't the way to start out on the right foot."You looked good. Awful good. They don't make 'em like that anymore."A mesmerizing montage of Bogie-Bacall moments from "The Big Sleep" set to the Brazillian Girls' "Lazy Lover." Cool and sultry."You'd make a good cop." This is the scene from "The Big Sleep" when Bogie interrogates the clerk in the book store. Being a detective has its moments..."Sugar won't work; it's been tried." Here is the famous "horse" dialogue when "Angel" meets Marlowe in the restaurant."I collect blondes and bottles, too." The following is a collection of clips from "The Big Sleep" featuring Bogie and the ladies. (I never realized how many women were in this movie making a play for Marlowe's affections.) Bacall outshines them all though, especially when she sings "And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine.""Count to ten, and then scream your head off." This clip features the scene where "Angel" rescues Marlowe from the ropes that imprison him. Not only is she handy with a knife and a cig, she also knows how to steal a kiss when there's no way her hero can resist.

Here's the trailer for Dark Passage. This is one of my favorite "Film Noir" movies of all time.
"15 minutes...I gotta start taking chances."
If you've never seen Dark Passage, here's a good clip to start with to get a feel for the unusual way this movie is shot. This 10-minute excerpt of Vincent's prison escape will leave you wanting more as Irene coaxes us into her apartment."I guess that's the way it is..." Irene sees Vincent's new face for the first time. And she likes what she sees. This clip from "Dark Passage" is brought to you in color, which arguably, compromises the whole effect of the film noir. But, I think you'll enjoy it anyway. This next clip features the opening minutes of the movie, sans Bogart, set to Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country."KEY LARGO (1948)"You're as mean as can be." Here's a tragic scene from "Key Largo.""You're gonna be my guests for a little while." Nobody could sneer like Edward G. Robinson. Here, he terrorizes Bogie, Bacall, and the whole house, while some well-placed thunder and lightning elevate the tension."My first sweetheart was a boat." Bogie and Bacall are right at home on the pier in this scene. Sailing was a favorite pastime for the couple, and the Santana was Bogie's number one girl... well, after Bacall, that is.

In the following two video excerpts from Scene By Scene (BBC), Lauren Bacall speaks candidly about the beginning of her Hollywood career, Bogie, "The Look", directors Howard Hawks and John Huston, and the movies she made with them. Watch how captivated and amused Lauren is when she is shown the spoof cartoon "Bacall to Arms" (1946) and the correlating scene from "To Have and Have Not." In the second video, find out about the "wiggle" at the end of "To Have and Have Not" and her thoughts about the saucy dialogue in "The Big Sleep." Lauren's interview in its entirety can be seen on YouTube, and it's so very characteristcally Bacall---lighthearted and frank. I merely chose to share with you the clips that feature the Bogart/Bacall movies.
