"This Steven King commits no lyrical crimes. When armed with his acoustic guitar as Gearloose he creates beautiful music that ticks all the boxes - originality, tight musicianship and well crafted lyrics."
- Vicki Anderson, The Press -

GEARLOOSE is the brainchild and solo musical project of Steven King. Steve gained his interest in music at an early age with lessons in piano and long car journeys set to old cassette tapes of the Greats such as Queen, Elton John, Annie Lennox, The Beatles and Dr Hook which instilled forever in him a pop-rock mentality.
Steven was a study of the piano for several years until he reached adolescence and discovered the alluring sound and physicality of the guitar, which now to this day is his primary tool of the trade. Also with adolescence, Steve decided to shake of the shackles of convention and rather learn by doing and freedom of expression rather than follow theory, which has influenced his unique style. Steven also garnered an appetite for teaching himself any other instruments he could get his hands on, such as the recorder and ukulele.
Since the age of fifteen, Steve played bass guitar in bands, most notably a three-year stint in Christchurch based pub-rockers Ample Cleavage where he learned the rigors, and joys of life as a touring musician, and over the years, built up a confidence, professionalism, and on-the-beat timing that could only be found in ensemble bass players.
As the years went on though, Steven found that he had words and music of his own that he wanted to share with the world, and rather than try and convince other people to convey his message he thought, "I'll just do it myself".
And so, in the early seasons of 2007, at the tender age of 22, Steven began to give back what had been festering inside him for his short lifetime. Not wanting to confuse anyone between himself and the multi-award winning horror novelist, Steven chose the stage name of GEARLOOSE, based on a character from one of his favourite cartoons.
Taking influences from his childhood, and others obtained later in life such as R.E.M., Beck, and Eliott Smith to culminate in the form of a semi lo-fi sweet acoustic alt-pop that's just a little off-center, sure to appeal to anyone who appreciates music, fun, and nostalgia. Writing it, recording it, and performing it to warm receptions.
In early 2008 work began on a 13-track eponymous debut album which is scheduled for a release in July. In the meanwhile, GEARLOOSE music can be heard throughout the internet and on the airwaves in New Zealand through the b.Net stations and KIWIfm.
