ABOUT MENA: ************************************************************
*
"There are singer/songwriters who shyly shuffle onto the stage and offer up their meagre compositions for anyone polite enough to listen. There are also singer/songwriters who take the stage, wrestle it to the ground and force the audience to pay attention with their sheer force of conviction. Vancouver-based Mena is of the latter variety. With a voice that sounds like the product of 1,000 cigarettes and almost as many shots of whiskey, when Mena spills her truth-soaked testimonials on the floor in front of you they're about as easy to ignore as a pool of blood. That's because she's not the kind of singer/songwriter who writes about quiet, private triumphs and tragedies of life but rather the loud, public tragedies with devastating, private repercussions..." (The Navigator, Written by J. Rehlinger). ************************************************************

Mena is singer/songwriter originally from Calgary, Alberta. Song writing developed at a very early age for Mena, writing her first song at age thirteen. "Looking back on the years, I think it was a really creative way to survive and transform [life difficulties] at the time into this stream of raw sound. I don't think it was necessarily an escape to or from anything. More like a constant reflection of everything piercing through me. I don't think it gets anymore stripped down then that. I have got very comfortable speaking through my guitar" (Navigator Interview). Song writing for Mena has naturally manifested itself into unveiling truths of the human experience. Whether it's using the power of the voice to shed light upon issues that are often easily ignored or magnifying an emotional attribution to a human condition, Mena's sound involves anyone that is willing to open up and allow it to breathe. She moved out to the Vancouver area in 2004. Since then she has had the courage to take her music from her bedroom stage to one with a real live audience. Mena has played various open-mics around the Vancouver area, and has done a hand full of intimate shows. Since the Fall of 2006, Mena has been joined by drummer (Gary) and bassist (Colin). The three have made a special musical connection bringing Mena's sound into full tilt.
