There’s a beautiful thing that I’ve come to understand about music, specifically listening to it. There’s frequently a point when I’m listening to something great, especially live, when the hyperactive part of my brain finally shuts off and I truly get to enjoy the tunes. Once I stop worrying about who’s playing what, what their fingers are doing, if my friend is gonna finish his burrito, etc, I slip into the moment, into a completely reactive state, where I’m carefree and can be whisked which ever way the music goes. It’s a feeling of relief and release from that busy state of mind produced by the over-stimulating, overwhelming, 24/7/365 world that has become life in the U.S. It’s the ultimate interaction that flows from the musician through the music into the audience and back. And from the audience, I’ve discovered over the years that it’s one of the only things that keep me somewhat sane. (It’s also the basis of my song “Sensory Diversionâ€.)
After years of escaping ‘the real world’ when I could to relish in the joy of watching live music, I had an “Office Space†experience in the mountains of Colorado, and realized that I needed to be on the other end of the equation, as a musician! Since then I've been lucky enough to find that beautiful peace of mind time and time again from the stage, and I couldn’t be more grateful for it! Hopefully, someday you can come out and let loose for a while and we’ll all get to spread some of those good feelings around!
Peace and good tunes,
Kevin
