The Novellas Band

About Me

The group consists of three brothers from a Chopi family in Mozambique, in the province of Inhambane and Gaza. They play the Timbila instruments, percussions and guitars. Their music is a combination of Mozambican traditional rhythms and melodies. In their performances, they include guest musicians from different nationalities playing instruments such as saxophone, trumpet, flute and double bass. Being part of a musical Tribe or family wouldn't mean being able to perform this music, but those three brothers appeal to be an example of spontaneous and gifted musicians. In the year of 2004, the brothers Nelson and Isildo J. Novela got the opportunity to buy their first Mbila and all of sudden, they were playing and composing complex and expressive musical pieces. The grandiose progressive sound produced by those instruments would drag the attention of anyone around and would invite you/them to a total musical absorbance, "like being in Trance". The flourished empty space of their neighbourhood in Mozambique, Matola-Fomento, responded with enthusiasm and created sensitivity in those musicians to proceed in their discovery and play. They travelled to Netherlands where they performed with their brother (Anselmo J. Johanhane) in many musical events such as: -Opening of the Imax Museum, for the Meijer Gemeent Rotterdam "Koorts" in Rotterdam 2004, -Klassiek-Delfhaven 2004 for the Mejier Rotterdam gemmente (with the presence of their two sisters as backing vocals and shakers), -Workshop with dancers and musicians from Codarts, 2004, Lantaren Jazz Extention. -Workshop in Music meeting 2004 in Njimengen (Timbila percussion and Dance).Their music is explained as the traditional music from the Chopi people in Mozambique and their influences. It also swings explaining the origins of the Jazz musical roots with its harmony rhythms and melodies. The languages in use in their singing repertoire are the southern African languages: Chopi, Ronga, Xangana and some South African Idioms as well as Portuguese, English and others as intermezzo.Originally, from Mozambique, the band is residing in the Netherlands at the moment where they develop Southern African Music through workshops, performances, studies and discography services.More to be known about Timbila. A suggestion on google about the Chopi music from Mozambique and its background."STIMELLA", videoclip from the first album of the NecoNovellas Band "Mita Famba - Would you go?" ............................................................ ............. ..........................Video realisation: Neco Novellas (www.myspace.com/neconovellas) and Marion Bourrelly (www.myspace.com/marionbourrelly).
