Lake Michigan

I'm the greatest Great Lake. (not a band).

About Me

I'm am so much cleaner than you'd imagine & change every day. I can turn myself over in days. I'm technically the same lake as Lake Huron, though I've got my own patterns of movement goin' on. I'm ~900 ft deep in the deepest, and ~300 ft deep at my mid-lake reef. I have another reef, Grey's Reef, separating me from Lake Huron in the north. They cut a trench in it to let freighters through.Big news of the last 10 years has been my invasion by Dressind mussels: Zebra mussels in shallow waters, then Quagga mussels in the deep. Now, Quaggas are starting to outcompete Zebras nearshore. Those little bastards can each filter so much water...a liter a day. They've changed my ecology & cleared the water column. LIGHT IS SHINING on my floor where it hasn't before. So now I more often house algae blooms & keep beachcombers on my western shore busy with mats of filamentous algae, Cladophora.Researchers, too.I've also been invaded by:Rusty Crayfish, Spiny Water Flea, Common Bighead Carp, Round Goby , Eurasian Ruffe, Sea Lamprey (ugly!) & White Perch. Curly-leaf Pondweed, Eurasian Watermilfoil & Hydrillia (from fish tanks!).Propagation work focuses primarily on Yellow Perch, Lake Sturgeon (living dinosaurs!), Whitefish, Lake Trout, hybrid Striped Bass and Sunfish. Pacific salmon have done well in me, too.The three Great Lakes of Africa would hold more water than the Laurentian Great Lakes, but people don't talk about Africa much.I like sailors, and sailboats. I've sunk quite a few of them. You can dive & check out my wrecks. I like kayaks, surfers, paddleboats, windsurfers, kitesurfers, people who grow organically. And fisherman. I'm not such a fan of jet skis, mercury contamination from coal-fired power plants, current phosphorus amounts in agricultural fertilizers, sewage overflows, lawn chemicals, or cigarette boats. (Did you hear that, Navy Pier?)I would like to see more funding from the EPA, and I really dig keeping my water to myself, and seeing it returned cleanly.I'm quite swell (get it?) at inspiring photography, meditation, weather patterns, humans pretending to be polar bears, and holding steady. If you love me, you can protect me.

"All that Green Sh*t" or, why it's a good idea to protect river fronts from storm runoff

Unfortunately, all that 'green shit' is an invasive algae, Cladophora sp., that's been here since the 1800's and grows with vigor as the phosphorus it requires is slipped into rivers and into the Lake...
