DJ Junior Star aka Tommy Fluker is a Cleveland, Ohio native and returning resident of the southern city of Birmingham, Alabama. A multimedia producer and formally trained percussionist, Junior Star credits his parents for nurturing his interests in music and the arts, but it was the early 80s sound of hip hop that re-introduced him to the spirit of the drum. While grasping this newly found culture and its elements of sound and visuals, he began co-writing drum cadences throughout his years of school band, further laying the foundation of his future musical ventures.
By 1996, Junior Star began digging seriously for various genres of music, building his first home studio and honing his deejaying and production skills with fellow DJ/producer Deshon Crayton (Cleveland, OH). Performances at the historic Cleveland Public Theater, Speak In Tongues, and The Colisseum, with performances and parties with Phife of A Tribe called Quest, Dres of Black Sheep and producing tracks and mix-cds for several underground acts in the city was the "secondary school" for this genre bending deejay/producer. His weekly ritual of attending the classic Afro Latin nights at The Brillo Pad (R.I.P) to hear the legendary Mazi Jahi on the wheels served as inspiration for his deejaying international and African inspired beats.
Junior Star has graced audiences ears at ongoing events @The Loft (B'ham, AL): The R.I.S.E. shows and arts marketplace, Caribbean Nights, and RLF's monthly fashion and martini mixer. First Fridays @ The Safari Cup Coffee and Gallery, The Nick, Sakura Restaurant, University of Alabama at Birmingham, The High Note with Turner South Network, to name a few. The Sofa Sessions, Pangea:SUPERcontinental Grooves, and Eclectique all formulated around expanding and exposing funky and beautiful music in a fashion he simply describes as "local to global".
Other ventures include the city's most anticipated reggae event held every second Sunday: Culture Moves - a dubbed out, roots meets rockers, meets classic dancehall night complete with visual projector screens, guest djs, musicians, live drummers and other unexpected weekly suprises, held at Amani Raha in Birmingham, Alabama.
Whether sought after to spin a Reggae, World Beat, or Classic Old School joint, Junior Star delivers the goods, leaving audience members wanting more. To meet this demand, Junior Star mixed and compiled a series of international mix cds that have quickly become popular amongst the domestic crowds and creating a strong international buzz across the waters. "The Export Series:Global Sounds and World Beat Treasures", released in August '06 is a four part cd compilation of Afrobeat, Classic Latin Grooves, Reggae Dubs, and Afro-Latin House (all sold seperately) with a touch of remixed material produced by Junior Star himself. Aside from nurturing international music culture in his local community, Junior Star's present and future plans also include independently launching his Kazi Musique label in late 2007, deejay performances in Europe, Canada, the west coast (USA), Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa (World Cup 2010), working on various remix and multimedia productions, and continuing to reach out and build bridges with the international and arts communities through myspace.com/djjuniorstar with free monthly mixes, record reviews, performance calendar, and live webcasts available exclusively to the 'supercontinental' community.
