Marco Gerace

Marco Gerace, classe ’75, nasce a Cittanova in Calabria, inizia lo studio della chitarra intorno ai 10 anni, imparando i primi accordi dal padre, chitarrista-armonicista e appassionato collezionista di dischi e strumenti. Contemporaneamente si dedica al pianoforte studiando privatamente per 6 anni.Inizia lo studio del jazz con Colombo Menniti, Eddy Palermo e Domenico Caliri.Dal 1995 frequenta l’Università della Musica (UM) e studia con A.Avena, M.Rosati, F.Zeppetella. In quel periodo è chitarrista della Big Band dell’UM diretta da Marco Tiso.Per le edizioni ‘95-‘96 è componente dell’Orchestra del Festival della Canzone "Note di Primavera" di Cittanova (RC).All’età di 20 anni acquista la prima chitarra classica e sei anni più tardi consegue con il massimo dei voti e la lode il Diploma di Chitarra presso il Conservatorio di L’Aquila.In Conservatorio consegue anche il IV° anno di Composizione e segue le lezioni del M° P.Damiani alla Cattedra di Jazz.Nel 1997-98 è componente dell’Orchestra di Strumenti a Plettro "Costantino Bertucci" diretta da C.Dionisi, terza classificata al Concorso Internazionale per Orchestre a Plettro "Giacomo Sartori” di Ala (Trento) edizione 1998, e con la quale suona in diverse rassegne e stagioni concertistiche a Roma e provincia.Nel 1998-99 collabora con il M° A.Taggeo alla rappresentazione dell’Opera “Sogni Siciliani” al Teatro Comunale di Messina, in qualità di assistente e revisore della partitura e cura la revisione per la stampa dell’opera lirica "La Saracena".Dopo il diploma segue Master Class con il M° M.Gangi ed il M° M.Delle Cese e approfondisce lo studio degli strumenti antichi e della Chitarra Barocca con il M° M.Pratola.Nel 2003 si laurea con lode in Lettere Moderne indirizzo Storia della Musica con una tesi sulle fughe di Mendelssohn.Nel 2005 prende parte al progetto Amazione, con la direzione artistica di Eleonora Brigliadori, in qualità di Assistente Musicale.Ha svolto attività live con diverse formazioni tra cui: Balkan Air, Box 36, Skunk & Nancy, WhiteOleander, Miele Acoustic Soul, The Trio, North Star Jazz Duo.E’ autore di un Manuale di Chitarra Moderna di prossima pubblicazione. Collabora con la rivista specializzata Axe Magazine.Insegna presso le scuole di musica Insieme per fare e Università della Musica (UM) di Roma.
  He was born in Cittanova, Italy, in 1975. He starts playing the guitar at the age of 10, influenced by his father’s great passion for music. At the same time he studies classic piano for about 6 years. After that he starts studying jazz guitar with Colombo Menniti, then he moves to Rome to study with Eddy Palermo. In 1994 he moves to Bologna where he performs with several rock and blues bands and there he meets Domenico Caliri, with whom he has the chance to share and to improve the jazz language. In 1995 he studies at the UM (University of Music), Rome, with Massimiliano Rosati, Fabio Zeppetella and Nicola Puglielli. At the UM he attends Andrea Avena Harmony Courses and he performes in the UM Big Band directed by Marco Tiso. In 1995 he gets the V° Guitar Course Degree at the “S.Cecilia” Conservatory in Rome. His “classical” career lasts about 6 years, but at the same time he attends Paolo Damiani’s Jazz classes and plays in the Jazz Ensemble at the Conservatory. In 1997-1998 he is a component of the “Costantino Bertucci” Orchestra, directed by Celestino Dionisi, third classified at International Plectrum Instruments Competition “Giacomo Sartori” at Ala (Trento), Italy, 1998, with which he plays in several concerts seasons in Rome and district. In 2001 he takes the Guitar Diploma with a first class degree and he gets the IV° Year Composition Degree at the Matteo D’Amico’s Composition Course. In 1998-99 he works with M° Albino Taggeo as an assistant and score reviewer on his Opera “Sogni Siciliani“ at Teatro Comunale, Messina (Sicily). He also makes the final review for the publishing of the Lyric Opera “La Saracena”, for the same Music Master. After getting the Guitar Diploma, he attends the Master Class with M° M. Gangi and M° M. Delle Cese and he keeps studying in depth ancient musical instruments and baroque guitar under M° M. Pratola. In 2003 he takes a first class honours degree in Modern Literature and Music History at Rome University “La Sapienza” with a Thesis Degree in the “Mendelssohn’s Fugue”. In 2005 he joins in the “Interactor Project”, as a musical assistant, supervised by Eleonora Brigliadori. He plays as a soloist and together with several classical, blues, rock and jazz groups like Albeniz Guitar Trio, Box36, Skunk, Miele Acoustic Soul, The Trio, North Star Jazz Duo. Since 2007 he’s collaborating with Axe Magazine as a journalist, transcriber and music critic. He is the author of a Manual of Modern Guitar, in two volumes, that is being published in 2008. At the moment he is teaching at UM (University of Music), Rome.
