About Me

Born and raised in the Ozarks, my musical roots began in unextraordinary fashion singing for a Springfeild, Mo. church choir. It would soon become apparent that the experience of creating rich harmony within a group would tattoo an indelible and seductive imprint onto my soul. Even an early experience with piano lessons failed to dissuade me from emulating the lifestyle of my grandfather who toured the south in the 30's playing coronet with a Dixieland band. After graduating from harmonica and high school I progressed to flute, alto & bari sax and eventually clarinet. Upon moving to the west coast I became a student of Jazz while living in Portland, eventually transferring to Evergreen State where I studied composition and arrangement under the tutelage of Stephen Scott, a noted master of the prepared piano. While attending Evergreen I also collaborated with Mark Eckert and Danny Kelly to form the legendary jam-band Heliotroupe. After leaving Heliotroupe I began a musical odyssey that would require me at times to play fretted and fretless electric bass, keyboard bass, upright bass, washtub bass and Chapman Stick. During this period the range of styles I played would span from punk to classical and include jazz, new wave, country, bluegrass, old-time, rock, Broadway show tunes, African highlife and noise music. Some of the other instruments I picked up along the way include classical guitar, Puerto Rican and Venezualen cuatros, dobro, kit and hand drums. I have recorded on cd, vinyl, and video. While playing with Big Idea in the late 80's we produced a number of music videos, one of which made it onto MTV in its heyday. The name of the video is "Go Ahead" and can be viewed at Mark Hastings MySpace site. I provide back up to Mark's lead vocals for Milroy Holler (check out our tunes on the MH myspace site) and have covered various parts including high tenor in Head for the Hills. My most recent project was The New Prohibition Band whose illustrious (...or dubious...) distinction it is to be the only Appalachian band based in Berlin. Despite the fact that there is no word in Deutch for 'Banjo' (...or 'Fiddle', for that matter...) they have thus far been quite well received. I am currently in the process of relocating back to Portland where I intend to avail myself for gigs and studio work playing bass, dobro, pedal steel and, where appropriate, clarinet and flute. And NOW!!! A word from our sponsors: You should create your own reality like me by using your psychic powers of visualization and affirmation! On the other hand, if you just want to pimp your site: You should create your own MySpace Layouts like me by using nUCLEArcENTURy .COM's MySpace Profile Editor !
