Bassholes

The Bassholes, since 1992. Until 2112.

About Me

For anyone still giving a fuck, the Bassholes are recording a... what? 6th? 7th? 8th lp? in August for Columbus Discount Records. And they will probably play a show on the 22nd for a CDR party at Cafe Bourbon Street w/ the benevolent and inspiring Times New Viking.Confounding all who know them, Don Howland and Lamont "Bim" Thomas forged a friendship that will last until one or both of them dies (the greying Howland first, most likely, though you never know.) It strikes many odd indeed that two individuals who seem to rankle those about them regularly might get along so well, but such is the case. Perhaps two, maybe three, disagreements in 15 years... Many of those years ago they agreed to take it to the grave, and despite current work with two quite formidable bands in their respective cities (Howland's Wooden Tit in Asheville, NC; Thomas's This Moment in Black History in Cle) they will always be Bassholes. They plan to get together in North Carolina in the summer of 2007 to record an LP, and then to tour some more. The last show they played was in Cleveland back in autumn 2005. A 40-show European tour earlier that year (dead of winter) in support of The Bassholes on Dead Canary was the last extensive tour, and a bitch it was! Didn't miss a show despite having a deranged, jazz fusion-loving driver and a van without a heater and designed for subcompact European asses. Which is not to say either of us is anything less than lean and mean; we're tall. The Bassholes started in 1992 as a 2-pc, when George Bush I reigned over a falling nation. The first Bassholes were the two Gibson Bros (Big Pine Boogie) who remained in Columbus, Ohio at the time - Don Howland and drummer Rich Lillash, practicing in a funeral home. Bim Thomas stepped in to fill in for a show at the Euclid Tavern with the Red Aunts in 1995 and stayed on. A zillion records and CDs on In the Red, Sympathy, Revenant, Dead Canary, et. al., a bunch of tours, a 2-piece band phenomenon that we did not participate in (1999-2002), and a bunch of friends later, we shoulder on. Because it's fun.Re. the now-defunct Bassholes site on myspace listing us from the Bronx(!?) Whoever did that, thank you, but this one is us. Also, there's a really cool vid on YouTube from Novi Sad in Serbia on that last European tour in '05 - whoever did that, thank you. We'll try to get some unreleased music and photos on here, as well as news, etc. We'll sell records and CDs off of this, too; check the blog entries in a week or so. We have a few of almost everything except the first LP on vinyl. You can contact us here or by mail at PO Box 16643/Asheville, NC/28816. We love our friends.
