Here's My Story...
Stephcynie Curry is an Artist about her business.
An eclectic range of performers are the inspiration for this talented vocalist. Legends from Sarah Vaughn to Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, and Michael Jackson to contemporaries; like, Alicia Keys, India.Arie, John Mayer, Yolanda Adams, Israel Houghton, John Legend, Whitney Houston, and Christina Aguilera.
She aspires for the professional acumen of Clive Davis and the artistic/ creative brilliance of Quincy Jones. Driven in the same manner, this Houston starlet is out to prove that things really are bigger in Texas. She aims for success with professionalism, an ambitious heart and a rich, soulful, sound that is uniquely her own.
Stephcynie’s drive has been rewarded in many ways throughout the years. She became the first vocalist to win the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music—Young Beacon Jazz Scholar Award her junior year. Prior to her winning, the award had always gone to an instrumentalist. But, Stephcynie, never one to stand for the norm, became the exception.
The ceremony featured jazz greats Al Jarreau, John Hendricks, and Roy Haynes. The NYC jazz community came out to celebrate including “60 Minutes” journalist, the late Ed Bradley. The event was hosted by philanthropist and jazz lover, Bill Cosby. The Beacon Award is one of many highlights among Stephcynie’s impressive resume at New School, New York City, and her hometown Houston, Texas.
At the tender age of three, Stephcynie’s parents “caught ear” of her humming around the house and decided to nurture "the gift within." The southern songbird began performing in elementary school and community talent showcases. Those performances led to larger venues such as the George R. Brown Convention Center and opening ceremonies such as the National Karate Federation regional competitions and the Annual Holy Week Prayer Breakfast hosted by the Mayor of Houston.
She became a featured vocalist in the “Young Performers” ensemble at the famed High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA). “Young Performers is dedicated to jazz, soul, and rock music, which could explain Stephcynie’s inspiration. The High School of Performing Arts is home of many Grammy awardees, including Beyonce Knowles.
During her junior year at HSPVA, Stephcynie broke another barrier by securing one of eight slots in a city wide audition, and becoming the only African American vocalist for a coveted spot In Houston Grand Opera’s High School Voice Studio. This complemented her promising high school singing career, which culminated with her being selected as the Most Outstanding Student in vocals at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts. These honors led to Stephcynie’s rise in popularity around the Houston music scene.
She enrolled at New School in 2003. As a freshman, she opened for Rene Marie at Town Hall. By her junior year, she lent vocal support to Hidden Beach neo-soul recording artist, Lina. Through the New School, she has obtained internships with Verve Records and Sony/BMG. Through Verity Records her internship led her to the urban promotions department at Jive Records. At Jive, an internship turned into an opportunity to assist Tina Davis (The Tina Davis Company) and Andre Thorpe in organizing the first leg of the Chris Brown Xbox Tour.
The buzz, however, has moved to the east coast NYC and New School In New York. Stephcynie is not only out to make her name in music but also to establish herself in business as a force to be reckoned with, by taking the business, artistry, creativity, and producing of the music she loves to respectable new levels.
Stephcynie recently graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree In Jazz Vocals and a Minor in Business this year from the prestigious New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. She will pursue music her passion until she is a viable fixture in the music/entertainment industry.
