Carmella "Mama" Corleone (born December 8, 1900 - Jan 27 1959) is a fictional character in Mario Puzo's The Godfather. She is the wife of crime boss Vito Corleone. Although she is prominently a rather traditional Italian immigrant woman with very broken English, she developes a close relationship with Michael's wife Kay. In 1916 Vito and Carmella's first child, Santino (Sonny) Corleone is born. When Sonny was eleven he met a homeless child named Thomas Hagen and brought him to the Corleone's home. He stayed with them since that day, and became another son to Vito and brother to his children. Fredo Corleone was born in 1919. He is a weak baby and has pneumonia. Michael Corleone is born in 1920 . In 1923 the only girl, Constanzia (Connie) Corleone was born. Carmella and the children accompany Vito visit Sicily. The live in Little Italy and then move out of the city to Long Beach, Long Island in 1939. In 1955 Carmella loses her love, Vito, while he plays with his grandson Anthony.
