This site is intended to help organize and inform the Pittsburgh community on current and on-going events, news and links regarding Emergency USA.
________________________________________________________Introduction:
Emergency was established in Milan, Italy, in 1994 to come to the aid of civilian war victims. Under the direction of and led by war surgeon and co-founder, Dr. Gino Strada, Emergency medical teams have entered war zones across the globe, in favor of war victims. Medical and surgical assistance and rehabilitation has been provided to more than 1.8 million people, to date.
Facilities are built and run by Emergency, and its services are free of charge, high standard and open to all those in need. Training for the medical and nonmedical personnel is provided in all of its facilities.
Emergency operates with overhead costs at approximately 6.16 percent.
The humanitarian efforts are made possible thanks to a vast international network consisting of volunteers who tirelessly contribute their much appreciated and needed talents, skills and financial support.

My Interests

A report on a recently completed project:
Medical Supplies to Kabul
A 20 foot container of medical consumables left Pittsburgh on March 18, 2005 and arrived at Emergency’s hospital in Kabul on June 30, 2005. The consumables (overall value $45,000) included: sutures, IV tubing, gurneys, chest drainages , gynecological exam tables, and assorted medical and surgical supplies.
This was the result of a joint collaboration between Global Links, a well reputed Pittsburgh based non profit www.globallinks.org and Emergency, USA's Pittsburgh volunteer group. Citizens from all walks of life contributed to the expenses of this shipment during 2004. Notably, the students of several high schools collected $1448 of the $7,000 needed, by organizing concerts at their schools.
This shipment included the purchase of a pre-owned container to be donated, along with its content, as a mobile warehouse to the consignee. Material was distributed by Emergency’s headquarters in Kabul to the various Emergency health care posts, clinics, surgical centers, pediatric and maternity wards in Afghanistan.

I'd like to meet:

People in the greater Pittsburgh area (and beyond!) who are interested in learning more about Emergency and its projects.
