About Me

A History of SummerSongs: The founding member of the non-profit organization called SummerSongs is Penny Nichols. She use to live in Santa Barbara, California and had a lot of women singer/songwriter friends: Kristina Olson, Joyce Woodson, Tena Moyer, Deborah McColl, Teresa Tudury and many others. They use to get together for weekend retreats where they would talk about songwriting and share stories, go swimming, have a lot of laughs and play a concert at a local Santa Barbara Club (Soho, Bluebird) on Saturday night. In 1993, Penny move to the Catskills mountains in New York and really missed her songwriting pals. She started looking for some way to create the right opportunity for them to be together again. Penny taught singing at Puget Sound Guitar workshop and loved the experience of going to guitar camp and she thought why not make a songwritng camp. Working one summer in the Catskills with Jay Ungar and Molly Mason helping to set up their camp, Ashokan Fiddle & Dance camp (www.ashokan.org) she realized she had found the perfect place for SummerSongs: A Songwriter's Summer Camp. Now SummerSongs is into it's 6th year and has added a camp during the winter called, WinterSongs. In 2004, Penny has come full circle by adding a west coast camp in the mountains behind Santa Barbara, Zaca Lake. For more information please visit our web site. www.summersongs.com
