Karin van Arkel first studied dance and theatre at the art academies
of Amsterdam and Utrecht. From 1995 she studied classical singing at the
Royal Conservatory The Hague. Teachers (among others): Lenie van den Heuvel,
Diane Forlano and Barbara Pearson. In 1999 she got a bachelor degree, and
in 2001 a master degree at the Royal Conservatory.
Already during her studies she performed in several opera productions,
and sang the roles of Lady Billows in Albert Herring of Benjamin
Britten (in a production of the New Opera Academy Amsterdam/The Hague),
Dido
in Dido and Aeneas of Henry Purcell, and Rosalinde
in Die Fledermaus
of Johann Strauss jr. She also performed several operetta roles as a member
of the operetta company 'Thalia' in Amsterdam.
She participated in several master classes, with Christina Deutekom,
Elly Ameling, and Graham Clark (among others), and took part in the Gregynog
Festival Master Classes (Wales), with Diane Forlano and Barbara Pearson.
In 2000 she was a participant of the belcanto course of Dame Joan Sutherland
and Richard Bonynge at the Britten Pears School of Music in Aldeburgh.
In 2004 she participated in the Master Classes of the International
Vocal Arts Institute (organized by the Metropolitan Opera
of New York City) in Tel Aviv; she took lessons with Mignon Dunn
and Joan Dornemann (among others). Also in 2004 she took part in
master classes by Henk Smit, organized by the Holland Music Sessions.
Karin van Arkel can be heard as soloist in opera performances, opera-concerts,
lied- recitals, and in oratoria. Lately she performed for instance the
soprano solo parts in the Petite Messe Solenelle of Rossini. April
2003 she sang the soprano solo part in the Gloria of Poulenc,
with the student choir and student orchestra of the University of Nijmegen,
conducted by Quentin Clare. March 2003 Karin van Arkel performed the role
of Rosalinde in a production of Die Fledermaus conducted by Jan
van Maanen, with the AUKSO Extended Chamber Orchestra from Katowice. In
2005 she performed the Stabat Mater of Szymanowski, with the
Leiden Student Choir and Orchestra, conducted by Quentin Clare and Gilles
Michels. And she could be heard in Den Bosch as Lady Macbeth in
Macbeth of Verdi, in a performance by Vereniging Bosche Opera en het Tilburgs
Begeleidings Orkest, conducted by Pieter Cox.
She works as a soloist with the following ensembles:
- woodwind ensemble 'Cobla
La Principal d'Amsterdam' . On april 7, 2004 she performed with this
ensemble in the big hall of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam
- Delphi Ensemble ;
with this ensemble she performs a.o. opera-arias of Puccini
- Ensemble Contours; with this ensemble she performed contemporary
music.
She also gives lied-recitals with compostions of Brahms, Berg Schoenberg,
and Hooning .
