A Voice Of Your Own is James Crabtree... This is my solo project... A Voice Of Your Own was actually started back in the days of my former band, Kitfisto... It was during this time in my life that I spent most of my free time in my basement recording songs. In the fall of 2004 I spent a few focused weeks and recorded some of my first solo material ever... I just wanted to keep things as simple as they could be and write songs that I felt good about no matter what it sounded like... I thought of this material as a good chance to to send a personal message to some of the people who were close to me at the time and to also as a chance to view myself as a solo artist... The outcome of most of this creative time that I spent was a collection of songs that were far more independent and removed from the traditional hardcore music that my band was playing at the time. So I quickly grew to love the diversity of this project compared to my other projects... That is how this band was given its name A Voice Of Your Own... Most of the songs I wrote were acoustic guitar with some really rough vocals but were somewhat structured like radio pop songs... So I then picked some of the more personal songs for my first demo "Saturday Night Special" which was independently released in the spring of 2005...
Then after what seemed like a very short break in the summer of 2006 I finally began writing songs for the second album "Hollywood"... The writing process for this second album was totally different from anything I had ever recorded or done on my own before... This project was much more complex and mature than the raw stripped down version of my previous demo... Recording in my home studio gave me plenty of room for me to be completely patient in writing this album... This approach allowed for me to dissect the songs from every different angle like a full band would do while writing... On the second release I wanted to experiment with different instrumentation and develop a much more professionally orchestrated overall sound... Most of the material I ended up writing was really rhythm driven and vocally stylized, with a much more developed sense of song structure... I am currently looking for different musicians for future A Voice Of Your Own performances and I plan to continue playing as many shows as I can during small breaks in my intensely crazy Bound To Fail schedule...
