Recently some-1 asked me, when i was a kid what i wanted to do when i grew up...i told them that i wanted 2 be a dj and give parties where people would come together and have great fun...1977...i was 11 years old, i heard Francois Kevorkian's edit on Musique's "In the Bush", and i was hooked...not too long after; my grand-ma asked me what i wanted for my birth-day... and i said, "2 Technics turn-tables(belt-driven of course) and a Gemini mixer"...every nite i fell asleep on my turn-tables dreaming about giving parties in New York {being from jersey and all}; i even had the name for my party, "ZOOTIES"...i grew-up in the Weequahic section of Newark...a talent-filled area of "Jersey"; all the way back to the days of Jerry Lewis...u had to be talented...it was in the air...singers, dancers, dj's, athletes; u name it, our neighborhood had it...by the middle of high-school, our base-ments, play-grounds, shcool gyms, parks; any-place we could set-up our tables and speakers...became musical havens where we honed our dancing and mixing skills...by the end of h-school; some of us, (Kevin Hedge {Blaze}, Nick Jones, Naeem Johnson, Michael Watford and others)began to make great contributions to the sound we had grown to love; "Club Music"...every-1 was recognizin the vibes comin from our hood... for a time the tennis courts at Weequahic Park felt just like the fountain in Wash. Sq...every-1 was there..Larry {Levan}, Col. Abrams, Frankie Crocker...every-1 was making appearances...if you were hanging in Newark...you were at the courts getting "zooted" {hense "ZOOTIES"}... 1983...the beginings of "House Music"...4 me came babies, marriage and almost 10yrs of not going out...one of the great chapters of my journey...fast 4-ward...1992... Club Shelter ...i hadn't been going out for awhile, but i knew this was the "house that Timmy built"...as i stretched 2 dance...my exact thought was, "i'm-gonna-luv-this-dance-floor"...and i did just that...i fell in love with #6 Hubert St...need-less to say i became a "Shelter-head"...fast 4-ward...1995...Vinyl...dancin at # 6 Hubert St again listening to one of my gurus "Louis Vega"...1996...11 am until when!? o-kay...3 dj's in the booth!? yeah right, that's gonna work!! who knew that we would be witness to the phenomena that has become Body and Soul , for nearly 7yrs. there was a weekly sanctuary, where we went to release our-selves...3-musical-gurus that gave the words Sunday and Spirituality a whole new meaning (i wrote that in my news-letter, plug, plug)...which brings us full-circle to the gift-of- today... with {FK} @ Deep Space, {DK} @ 718 Sessions, {JC} @ Love and so many other beauti-full voices keeping us all connected through ancient vibrations...an 11 yr. old boy's dream can still be a reality {ZOOTIES ha ha!}...Voice of voice NYC is a celebration that i host once a month paying homage to all the beauti-full voices {past, present and future} who inspire others to hear and use their own voice...it's a tribute to all those who inspired a boy to dream of sharing his energy through dance and music...as i call them..."my musical gurus"(Larry Paterson, Francois K, Larry Levan, David Mancuso, Ted Curria, Timmy Regisford and Tee Scott just to name a few)...it's an extension of and to all parties...because i believe each party has it's own beauti-full voice that connects it to another voice and another...having many voices seen and heard as one...through the most ancient vibration..."MUSIC"...through music our bodies become our voice...there's no need for words in any language...there's no need for race, politics or religion...through music is happiness - sadness - health - peace and serenity...through music is Love Energy...Share your voice in acceptance and acknowledgement of the ancient vibrations that connect us all...
