WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT WILD RUMPUS

“Without doubt one of the freshest acts to appear on our radar for some time… Wild Rumpus manage to pull off that precarious marriage between far-out psyche sounds and the dancefloor; that obfuscated interzone where disco, rock and electronics collide.”

Clash Magazine

“’Psychedelic surf cosmic disco’ is how the label describes ’Purple Somersault’ and I’m not going to argue except to say that they missed out the ’lunatically good’ bit. Just as thrillingly good are the pair of way-out disco mixes from Prins Thomas which, not to put too fine a point on it, together sum up just about everything that’s good about noughties dance music. Genius all round. *****

i-DJ, Top Tune

“We’re in the presence of greatness here…With roots in psychedelia and disco, this is one hell of a marriage…At last the Beefheart connection rears in club-world and it is indeed magical.”*****

Update

“Lucas’ guitar is so wigged-out it’s practically wearing a toupee, while Cosmo’s beats mean “Purple Somersault” turns the same interstellar disco gymnastics as Lindstrom and Prins Thomas.”

BBC Collective

Wild Rumpus are Cosmo and Gary Lucas: two pioneers of forward thinking music, but from very different backgrounds combine to make the kind of music you simply can’t ignore but at the same time can’t quite put your finger on.

Colleen Murphy, aka Cosmo, has been pushing musical boundaries since her teens. Born near Boston but relocated to NYC in ’86, Cosmo had her own radio show by the age of 14, which she held for many years, showcasing her love of psychedelic, garage and prog rock and was one of the only outside DJs ever to grace the decks at the infamous birthplace of clubbing, David Mancuso’s ’The Loft’. Cosmo’s work in the realms of disco, nu wave, electronica, house, nu jazz and crossover rock has allowed her to develop an eclectic DJ style that is beloved by DJs, promoters, clubbers across the globe. The mix of Cosmo’s psychedelic roots and disco tutelage truly explains the sounds of her partnership with one of the guitar world’s genuine pioneers.

Gary Lucas was recently dubbed the ’Guitarist of 1000 Ideas’ by the New York Times and is widely considered to be the guitar world’s greatest living talent. Previously of Captain Beefheart, Gary is famed for his multi-faceted musical creativity, collaboration projects, film scores and most recently, his work with new band "Gods & Monsters". As the co-writer of Jeff Buckley’s seminal "Grace", Gary is no stranger to making hits, yet his passion for experimentation continues to make him one of music’s more interesting characters.

It’s the type of partnership that can lead to quite uncontrollable excitement and with an album release planned for 2008, it could be one of the most interesting LP’s of next year.

About Cosmo

“Colleen Murphy aka DJ Cosmo has never been one to play safe. Her sets are a reflection of her geographical and musical roots that find themselves standing somewhere between the post-disco of New York and the sharp-edge of London. Cosmo's skill at linking the past with the present to create something altogether more edgy is not completely uncanny given the fact that she remains a protégé of both David Mancuso and François Kevorkian, being one of the few guests at both the renowned Loft and Body & Soul parties. Her appearances across North America, Asia and Europe have crystallised her reputation as being a DJ who is as comfortable with the cutting-edge as she is with the rich musical heritage of her East Coast upbringing. Her instinctive leaning towards eclecticism rather than short-sightedness is again borne out by her Bitches Brew record label - itself named after the ‘difficult’ Miles Davis album that crossed the boundaries of rock and jazz.”
Rob Wood, Jockey Slut

“While many DJs merely follow fashion, the most memorable are those than not only demolish dance floors consistently, but those whose mixes stand solid outside the realms of a club. Cosmo is one such DJ. She shuns fads for a more visceral approach to her craft. And what a craftswoman she is!”
June Joseph, XLR8R Magazine

“Cosmo’s popularity has grown through word-of-mouth recommendation rather than press hype, with props coming from the highest-ranking DJ’s themselves.”
Dave Swindells, Time Out London

Throughout her career Cosmo has demonstrated a deep understanding of music and has been profiled as an artist of integrity with major kudos from the best DJs and producers on the planet.

“She’s very devoted and very pure about the music. She’s one of the only people I would trust, both with the music and with the equipment, to fill in for me.”
David Mancuso, The Loft

As well as being recognised as a premier club DJ, Cosmo has a worldwide reputation in broadcasting. She held one of the most revered dance mix radio shows in her native New York for seven years and prior to that hosted several radio shows devoted to punk rock, new wave, alternative and sixties psychedelic and progressive rock. She was a commercial radio jock in Japan and produced music magazine shows which were syndicated on over 250 radio stations across the U.S.A. She currently airs mixes on the most eminent music websites worldwide.

Cosmo’s seamless sets have also been permanently documented. Her compilation on Yellow, “The Disco Tech of Cosmo”, celebrated Cosmo’s musical heritage and Time Out London described it as “One of the best comps of the year”. As Compilation of the Month, DJ Magazine noted, “She stands supreme as a link between the city where modern dance music’s history was born and the country where- lets allow ourselves a little Anglocentric arrogance here – its future is mapped out.” This is Cosmo’s third foray into the compilation world as she co-produced the critically acclaimed “David Mancuso Presents The Loft” series on Nuphonic and compiled and mixed “New York Afterhours: A Later Shade of Deep” on Nervous in 1998.

Like the Miles Davis album after which it is named, Cosmo’s record label Bitches Brew is a fusion of musical styles and receives the highest accolades from her peers:

“Every Bitches Brew release that drops through the door has me boggling round the room within seconds - always quality and a truly international sound that mashes up so many styles but always comes out clean. Good vibrations!”
Rob Da Bank, Radio Host, BBC Radio One

Many of the productions on Bitches Brew are co-produced by Cosmo such as Bambú’s cult classic cover of Sergio Mendes’ “The Real Thing” and Linda Williams’ “Elevate Your Mind”. Cosmo Presents Ch’i is a project that focuses on her songwriting and production talents. “Mistaken” is the follow up to her first Ch’i production “Loneliness” on Suburban. Cosmo co-produced Bitches Brew’s debut artist Jinadu and remixed S.U.M.O.’s “Ntujjo” which Ashley Beedle claimed was one of the best house records of the year. Cosmo also collaborated with Danny Wang as Light Fantastic for the uber-cool German label Playhouse and with Ben Mitchell (Sao Benitez / Mr. Hermano) as Tidal on Disorient. She is currently working on new material under the moniker Wild Rumpus with former Captain Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas.
