Now on to the bio:
La Buena Musica. If Sucio’s reason for being could be explained in two words those words would simply be good music. You see, Sucio Smash is one of the last of a dying breed the true DJ. At a time when the meaning of the term DJ has devolved into guy or girl who plays music regardless of their skill level, Sucio sets himself apart from the rest with an unbridled passion for his craft and genuine love of the music he plays.
Born in the Manhattan’s Lower East Side and raised in Camuy, a town on the northwestern coast of Puerto Rico since the age of five, Sucio was brought up in a household that was always full of music. While his mother played salsa records by Hector Lavoe, his father would be teaching him how to play the congas. As he got older, tapes his cousins and friends would bring from their trips to the States would spark a love affair with something other than Latin music, hip-hop. "That shit just spoke to me!" he says emphatically about the new genre. Little did he know his exposure to these tapes would change the course of his life. In his town, he became one of a small crew of hip-hop heads dedicated to the music. But as time went on, the numbers of hip-hop enthusiasts dwindled. This is when Sucio Smash decided it was time for a change.
In 1999, Sucio outgrew Camuy and decided to move from a place with a population of 35,000 to New York City home to 9,000,000 hustlers, survivors and philosophers. Equipped with some gear, a few family contacts in NYC, he headed to the Big City. Following in the footsteps of some of hip-hops biggest legends, Sucio found a job at the same Sears that Kid N Play and Salt N Pepa had worked at in their youth. While there, he scrimped and saved enough money to buy a turntable here, a record there and eventually built a system. His hard work and hustle were beginning to pay off when he met Bobbito. Sucio Smash had already been an avid fan of Bob’s legendary radio show and found a kindred spirit in the Nuyorican Renaissance man. Years of assisting Bobbito by running errands and co-producing the CM Fam-A-Lam radio show, transformed into a strong friendship.
Bobs retirement from radio would be a bittersweet event for Sucio because although it was the end of one chapter of hip-hop history, another one would begin when Sucio would take over the time slot previously held by Bobbito, Stretch Armstrong and Lord Sear. The new show Sucio Smash co-hosted with his partner Timm See received a good response. The Squeeze Radio show is one of the most listened to Hip-Hop radio shows in NYC and its presence on the internet has brought its popularity to an international scale. In 2006 the show was named "Best Hip Hop Show" by Time Out New York magazine. His formula for the show is simple; he provides good music, funny and intelligent commentary to his fans.
"Its just the fact that you can make somebodys whole day or sometimes even their whole week just by playing the right song". Combining strong fundamental skills like blending with eclectic taste and knowledge of various genres of music, Sucio can rock almost any crowd. Over the course of a Sucio night, youll hear everything from Prince to A Tribe Called Quest to Fela Kuti to the Talking Heads. Unlike other DJs who mistake eclectic for schizophrenic, Sucios grasp of mood, tempo and rhythm make his transitions flawless and his blends seamless. His satisfaction at nights end doesnt come from the amount of money hes made or ladies hes met. No, Sucio gets his kicks from seeing smiling and sweaty party-goers who have experienced the cathartic effect of dancing away their problems and being free, if only for a measure of a song.
