Hello, my name is Wendy Guevara. I was born in Central London. When my mother was pregnant with me she would go for walks in Hyde Park and I would usually kick when she came to the statue of Peter Pan. As a result I was named Wendy after the character in that children's storybook. Before my second birthday, I went to Trinidad, in the Caribbean and did not return to England until my last year at primary school. On my mother's side I am of Carib Indian, Latin American and African decent. On my father's, my great great grand mother was a Carib Indian and my great grandmother was a Hong Kong Chinese. My grandmother then threw in Arawak Indian to the mix. (NB: Caribs and Arawaks are native peoples of the Caribbean before the Europeans came. The Europeans then brought Africans, Asian Indians, etc, etc.) Therefore, for my ancesters love had no racial and cultural boundaries. In my mid teens I moved back to Trinidad and at 17 I started working for Janelle Penny Commissiong who was the first Black Miss Universe till I became 21. Those were wild, fun, happy days!! I have a 1st class BA honours degree and a Master of Science degree from London University but know so little. There is just so much to explore and discover in the world especially in terms of art and music. In the world of jazz people always want to know who you've worked with so here goes! As a musician, these are some of the people I've had the pleasure to work with:- first and foremost I've performed with the legendary bassist - Peter Ind (who's worked with Billy Holliday, Charlie Parker and Buddy Rich); vibraphone player, Roger Beaujolais (works with Mark Lockheart and Robin Aspland); saxophonist, John Barnes (who has worked with many greats including the late Humphry Lyttleton); bassist, Serge Ngando (worked with Miriam Makeba, Ladysmith Black Mambazo); Bass/keyboard/stealpan player, Mick Hutton (worked with Nigel Kennedy, Claire Martin); pianist, Simon Brown (works with Lewis Wright); Dave King (worked with Charles Aznavour); guitarist, Nils Solsberg (worked with Brian Ferry and Claire Teal). Finally, for the people who keep asking me this question - yes, I did sing for the designer JASPER CONRAN at his home.
