Nolan Stolz began his composition studies in Las Vegas with Virko Baley in 1999. He received his B.M. in Composition and his B.M. in Jazz Studies from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2004
In June 2007, he received his M.Mus. in Composition from the University of Oregon, where he studied with Rob Kyr and David Crumb.
He is currently pursuing a DMA in Music Composition with a minor in Music Theory at The Hartt School in Hartford, CT where he studies with Larry Alan Smith.
Mr. Stolz has written for large ensembles: Haystacks (for Orchestra), Jet Setting (for chamber orchestra), Haiku Winter (for string orchestra), Puget Sound (for soprano and wind ensemble), Two Stars--Bitonal (for jazz ensemble).
Chamber pieces such as Table for Four, The Touch: A Fantasy for mixed ensemble, Table for Two, Vernacular Music (for electrified instruments), 4 Haiku Settings (for instrumental mixed ensembles), have been commissioned and performed by various ensembles and festivals.
His vocal works include The Touch: A Black Box Opera, Fog, Fear and Loathing, Two Stars, Last Sonnet, H2Eau, Puget Sound, Crossroads Within: A Jazz Opera
He has solo pieces for organ, bass, harp, cello, viola, and piano as well as two viola sonatas and two violin sonatas.
Stolz's output also includes approximately 25 miniatures.
Stolz's music has been performed in all regions of the US and in Europe including the Music Today Festival, Oregon Bach Festival, Las Vegas Music Festival, the Las Vegas International New Music Festival and the Electroacoustic Juke Joint
Mr. Stolz has had private instruction and/or master classes with Mark Applebaum, Jennifer Barker, Paul Chihara, Michael Daugherty, Jed Distler, Osvaldo Golijov, Daron Hagen, Jing-Jing Luo, Vincent McDermott, James Mobberly, Ivan Moody, Pauline Oliveros, Marta Ptaszynska, Roger Reynolds, Bright Sheng, Dorrance Stalvey, Veljio Tormis, and Menachem Wiesenberg.
Mr. Stolz teaches Music History and Appreciation at Three Rivers Community College in Norwich, CT and at The Hartt School in West Hartford, CT
