His love for music began in the home having been taught to play the guitar by his late father at the age of five years old. This opened doors that were never going to close. The seeds for performing live were first sewn in the church being part of the youth choir, run by his mother and sister.Being scouted at an annual convention led to the formation of the reggae band Curfew – ‘known as one of the most versatile youth bands’ who went on to support reggae giants Aswad (‘On and On’ UK No1), Pat Kelly and Smiley Culture (‘Police Officer’ UK top 20). Curfew also appeared on the BBC’s popular children’s TV programme ‘Freetime’.Gary was also one of the main songwriters/producers and partners of Rough Beat Productions who achieved numerous top 10 hits in the UK Reggae charts - working with artists such as Sweetie Irie, Berris Bassa, Vivien Jones and Sammy Levi. The boy band ‘Worlds Apart’ had Rough Beat to thank for the production and vocal arrangement on Aaron Paul’s demo which resulted in him being signed as lead singer for the group. Worlds Apart later went on to achieve 5 UK top 30 hits (including ‘Could it be I’m Falling in Love’ No 15).Working behind the scenes in production and songwriting did not diminish Gary’s zeal for singing. Along with his two brothers Mikey and Andrew they soon formed R&B group ‘The Brothers Grant’. As the brothers honed their songwriting/vocal and production abilities they began to create a real stir in the industry. Although large interest was generated with some of the major record companies (Including EMI and Island) contract negotiations were mired and a deal was unfortunately not secured. The trio went on to support Ce Ce Peniston at the London’s Hippodrome and obtained play listing of their debut release ‘Compromise’ on Radio One (Sheffield) and Choice FM. They also had the pleasure of working alongside writing and producing for Maxi Priest (US Billboard number 1 artist), and Gill Francis and Monie Love.Gary now embarking on a solo career culminates all his influences to produce a smooth, melodic acoustic sound. “It’s about pushing the boundaries and taking off limits” says Gary passionately. “I love to write with a twist, sometimes we find it easier to talk about the surface truth of our circumstances but the real truth in our hearts can be wedged a little deeper – I like to think of music as a great retriever’.His album is scheduled for release later this year.
