HEADTOAVOID RECORDINGS FIRST RELEASE SOLD OUT!
VOIDHEAD - LAND (EP)
HTAR 001
LIMITED 100 HANDNUMBERED COPIES
01. Land
02. Monotonous
03. Schematic
04. His Will
============================================================ =====
"Named for the Godflesh song, Voidhead avoids the obvious Godflesh elements (crushingness, nihilism) in favor of the liminal ones (atmosphere, drone). The four tracks of Land (Head to Avoid, 2007) each sound quite different and thus slightly incohesive. However, Voidhead impressively writes distinct-sounding songs with elements that usually emphasize sound over song.
Thus, "Land" is drum machine-driven and abstract, "Monotonous" sounds mystical and Middle Eastern, "Schematic" is Earth-ily twangy and clean-toned (that this very American sound translates to Athens, GR fascinates me), and "His Will" drops big, NeurIsis guitars. The other tracks could have used some of this weight for cohesion's sake, but each one works well individually, and the variety shows more than enough range for a full-length. Close listening reveals background depth, subtle movement, and small details.
Refreshingly, this project isn't trying to be heavy. Voidhead is exploring Godflesh's ghost and not just rehashing the legacy. The recording has occasional digital clipping, but for a DIY release, it's not bad. The packaging is special - three panels of heavy stock paper, hole-punched and fastened with a metal brad. Hand-numbered edition of 100, available for a mere 3 euros via the band's MySpace."

"Materialized in Athens sometime around 2006, Voidhead burst out of the “void” and with a “head” full of ideas, they enter the world of discography through a vibrantly bleak and hypnotically captivating debut-album entitled “land”.
The outfit consists of Thanos (also in Straighthate) and Helm (also in Locust Leaves) while Viral Graphics is responsible for all the illustrations and lay-outs.
Voidhead thrive in a context solely inspired by nature where hypnotic drones, ethereal melodies and heavy, sludgy guitars co-exist in the most musical way.
“Land”, their first sonic “journey” released on their own Head to Avoid Recordings, consists of four, relatively long, guitar-driven compositions, four instrumental, moody odes to the physical beauties around us.
Sullen, humming soundscapes and slowly building, repetitive, haunting rhythms pave the way for discreetly gloomy, delicate yet raw guitars to take charge, fondle and embrace the listener.
A dark, nocturnal and even psychedelic, at times, ambience (prevalent especially in tracks such as “monotonous” and “schematic”) roams through Voidhead’s sonic architecture.
On the first listen, it is tempting to dismiss this as just another run-of-the-mill attempt to jump on that "post-something", Red Sparowes - meets - Tribes of Neurot - meets - Mogwai bandwagon. A second spin though drags you in further and by the third listen, you can trace some mesmerising special qualities and lots of potential in the four tracks of "land".
Special mention should go out to the graphics which, in the case of Voidhead, do not simply supplement the music but rather work together with it, towards creating a coherent and special, audiovisual experience.
To sum things up, “land” is an honest, spirited album of brooding power, a listening experience that’s definitely worthy of your precious time... and money.
Support the underground. "

"Named after the Godflesh song, Greek band Voidhead utilizes several elements of the drone legends to create a cohesive EP that favors the atmosphere of its main influence but adds a rare and welcome trait: variety. Each of the four songs favor a unique sound that range from lush to mystical to radiant to psychedelic. It’s a strong first release for a band that surely will make its mark on the post / drone metal genre."

WE ARE PROUD TO DISTRIBUTE IN ATHENS (GREECE) ONLY:
Aidan Baker "Noise of Silence" cdr (HyRe002)
Aidan Baker is a true artist. He is one of the founders of Arcolepsy Records, Arc and of course Nadja. He released tones of works on many labels. "Noise of Silence" is the first collab between him and Hyperblasted Recordings. The whole work is an amazing piece of art. The musical part is one 50-minute long time track by Mr. Baker in his own experimentalish drone/ambient/noise stuff. Aidan Baker "builds" his music piece by piece, step by step. Imposing atmospheres, genious guitar drones and loops lead the track to a climax. A masterpiece of experimental music.
All guitars and tapes by Aidan Baker.
Amazing artwork 'n' layout by the artists of Viral Graphics .
Packaged in 3 pannel deluxe cardboard paper with a silver ink touch embossed which gives the colours life. Limited edition of 150 handnumbered copies.

AIDAN BAKER - NOISE OF SILENCE (HYPERBLASTED RECORDINGS,2007)
"The following review concerns only those who adore the deterioration this art named music can offer "for they shall conquer the feeling".
A lot of people sank in Aidan Baker's world - the world of a multi-artist. Each one of them came out alive. Each one of them came out better. The diving place could be the port of the ARC collective, the opening among Pederecki String Quartet's rocks or the abyss of his personal discography and the one that contains the magic condemned world of the slow, destructive and bestial shell of Nadja. Or even the landscapes of his writings, these collections of words stashed inside the art-spitting sack of despair. Not one of these divers lost anything. Not even Aidan Baker.
Which is the sound of silence? A noise. Bearing no similarity to anything we' ve met until now. The noise of silence does not shriek in high db's, it doesn't yell to declare its presence. In the silent system, noise is merged with peace and quiet, holding (up to the point of nailing) the listener to his place, almost in a metaphysical manner as it leaves us with the gaze of a fool, the one we stick in our faces when confronting the incomprehensible. During the 50-minute presentation of the sound of silence theory a voice whispers the word "suicide" every now and then, driving the listener at top speed towards the wall of madness. By the looks of it, Aidan Baker carefully planned this destructive machine, as suicide stands as the only salvation from the beauty of the moment, a moment which adresses you in slow motion, subsequently allowing the study of the microfilm in order to spot the tiny dots in which the mute storyteller carefully hid the elements of the ancient Greek tragedy and made space for tapes and guitars to narrate the story. And what does a story teach? Get real, there's no answer to that question. It depends on the story. What happens when you end up having the part of a wordless troubadour's audience whose ultimate goal is the spreading of a mix of stories that as it seems are not connected by any means? You stand surprised for you know that your education did not take any step at all towards completion, still, you feel a better man. Nobody ever succeeded in defining what "becoming a better man" means. Yet, you are a better man. You know it. "Noise Of Silence" gifted you with the "death to poets" saying. And now you understand why it's so true. Words can be explained. The teachings of silence not.
And these words are so few because i don't have anything more to say. If you want any additional info there's only the following to find: "Noise Of Silence" comes hand-numbered in 150 copies in a beautiful digipak edition (and only) and you can order it from HeadtoAvoid Recordings (if you reside in Athens, Greece) or Hyperblasted Recordings through which it was released. A summer gift to yourselves for the winter.
P.S.: In case i didn't make myself clear (highly possible), i loved this record."

KOMMPOUND & PASCAL CRETAIN SPLIT - THE EMPATHY AXIS
HTAR 002
LIMITED TO 128 HANDNUMBERED COPIES
CD 0001:
Kommpound
1. sunny afternoon
2. balkan
CD 0010:
Pascal Cretain
1. denial of service
2. the sun covered in 0s and 1s
"A double 3inch CD in an astonishing package, "The Empathy Axis" split-release epitomizes all that’s genuinely underground and spiritedly creative.
Kommpound (aka Panos Agoros of Straighthate fame) uses and abuses field recordings to deliver a cosmic ambience not dissimilar to that of KK Null. His part of "Empathy", clocking in at around 20 minutes, could be described as a more atonal and monolithic, beat-free Odd Nosdam session.
Kommpound stands more on the ambient than on the harsh-noise side of things. "Sunny afternoon" evolves over a droning pattern that’s occasionally splashed with loud, discordant sounds. Samples from something like an afternoon TV show can be heard way in the back pervading the composition with an aura of every-day gloominess while Pascal Cretain’s ukulele comes to justify the "sunny" reference in the song’s title. Made up of similar constituents, "Balkan", Kommpound’s second track, projects a more industrial and more “musical” at times, atmosphere.
Invoking security code as a thematic analogy for his sound, Pascal Cretain, both hacker and underground music enthusiast, manages, contrary to what one would expect, to get a remarkably coherent and well worked-out sense of composition rear up out of his sonic wreckage.
Pascal's experiment of turning lifeless computer code into sound stands out not only as particularly interesting but also as intriguingly challenging. "Denial of Service" sees its moody, humming sonic frame periodically interrupted by rhythmic pulses and menacing swoops of high - pitched, screeching noise while "The Sun Covered in 0s and 1s" kicks off with a slow-burning, dullish buzz just to let an ethereal Sunn O))) / Boris sample sneak in further down the road and shed “light” on its inhospitable, grey and grim soundscape.
Special salute should also go out to the outstanding black and white artwork and the extraordinary packaging done by Viral Graphics.
Limited to 128 handnumbered copies , "The Empathy Axis" is bound to become a much sought after rarity soon. Do yourselves a favor and get it while it’s there."
