About Me
OUT NOW!!!KOMMPOUND/PASCAL CRETAIN "THE EMPATHY AXIS" 2x3"CD-R (BB008/HTA02)Experimental noise/ambient extravaganza in a beautiful deluxe packaging. Field recording-based ambient versus the sound of hacker/security code. Limited to 128 handnumbered copies. Get it while it lasts!Kommpound (aka Panos Agoros of Straighthate fame) uses and abuses field recordings to deliver a cosmic ambience not dissimilar to that of KK Null. His part of “Empathyâ€, clocking in at around 20 minutes, could be described as a more atonal and monolithic, beat-free Odd Nosdam session.Kommpound stands more on the ambient than on the harsh-noise side of things. “Sunny afternoon†evolves over a droning pattern that’s occasionally splashed with loud, discordant sounds. Samples from something like an afternoon TV show can be heard way in the back pervading the composition with an aura of every-day gloominess while Pascal’s Cretain’s ukulele comes to justify the “sunny†reference in the song’s title. Made up of similar constituents, “Balkanâ€, Kommpound’s second track, projects a more industrial and more “musical†at times, atmosphere.Invoking security code as a thematic analogy for his sound, Pascal Cretain, both hacker and underground music enthusiast, manages, contrary to what one would expect, to get a remarkably coherent and well worked-out sense of composition rear up out of his sonic wreckage.Pascal's experiment of turning lifeless computer code into sound stands out not only as particularly interesting but also as intriguingly challenging. “Denial of Service†sees its moody, humming sonic frame periodically interrupted by rhythmic pulses and menacing swoops of high - pitched, screeching noise while “The Sun Covered in 0s and 1s†kicks off with a slow-burning, dullish buzz just to let an ethereal Sunn O))) / Boris sample sneak in further down the road and shed “light†on its inhospitable, grey and grim soundscape.Special salute should also go out to the outstanding black and white artwork and the extraordinary packaging done by Viral Graphics.Limited to 128 handnumbered copies , “The Empathy Axis†is bound to become a much sought after rarity soon. Do yourselves a favor and get it while it’s there. ("THE EMPATHY AXIS" review from morethansounds.net)

BLAST BEAT MAILMURDER has started out with the ambition to propose to the extreme/hard music audience in Hellas-Greece an alternative to the records available in stores back in the early 00's. In the same veins as its founder Panos' notorious CHAOTIK WEBZINE , it combined the aesthetics & sounds of the underground death/black & hardcore scenes. Eventually the mailorder (appropriately named "mailmurder" by 9:deathoftheeast:9 @ Sonichaos Aeon) evolved into a small label producing SUN OF NOTHING's debut album & STRAIGHTHATE's debut mini-CD, which are almost sold out by now. A flow of new releases is out, check them out. Please do not hesitate to contact us for our mailorder katalog, as well as for possible trades or wholesale.=================================================

++++++PRESS++++++ STRAIGHTHATE "INDIGENOUS" CD (BB007)
"Indigenous" marks as their first full-length (preceded by 2004’s “Grim Memories†mini-CD).
With one foot planted firmly in the band’s grindcore/hardcore roots, and the other one in the metal spectrum, the five-piece draws its influences heavily from the whole, past and present, Relapse roster to deliver a work of remarkable high quality.
“Indigenous†sets out, through 12 gripping, well worked-out compositions, to re-establish the importance of indigenous cultures in the minds and the hearts of its listeners.
Shrieking, high-pitched (mainly) vocals, hammering drums, thrashing guitar riffs and thundering bass lines all work together coherently towards that end.
The album kicks off in a straight-up, no bullshit, all guns blazing kinda way that brings back late 80s grindcore and early 90s death metal memories, a pattern which more or less remains prevalent until track six (“Curse the Unholy Corpse of Jesusâ€).
From track seven (“Stench of Immortalityâ€) onwards, black metal influences start breaking in and this is where Straighthate totally shred. In songs such as “Kollapseâ€, “Procreate†and “Stench of Immortality†the guitar lines project a feeling of grim, unholy and rare-to-find blackness that’s bound to haunt the mind for weeks. Then, a “postâ€, acoustic six-minute interlude comes to calm things down and lead the sonic journey of “Indigenous†to its apocalyptic, cathartic end.
A strong and genuine anti-christian stance drives the whole concept and battles lyrics-wise middle class kids, the “cannibalistic†mentality of contemporary societies and “the holy stench†in defense of a past that’s gone but not forgotten.
Since crystal balls and tarot cards do not actually fall within the areas of my expertise, I cannot really answer Straighthate’s question “which one of us is gonna die first?â€
What I know though with certainty is that these 12 impiously irreverent Straighthate songs can easily secure us all a place in hell.
Hell it is then. ( http://morethansounds.net )
"Indigenous" is the latest outing from Greek death/grinders Straighthate (on Blast Beat Mailmurder), which puts forth 12 tracks of the band's continually progressing outbursts in about 40 minutes. There are definitely still plenty of relentlessly blasting drumbeats and blazing tremolo picking riffs backing vocals that shift from burly growls to strained, snarling screams (and everything in between) - as well as thick, at times subtly melodic death metal riffs and loads of churning dissonance and winding layering that's somewhat reminiscent of Napalm Death circa "Fear, Emptiness, Despair" - but there's a lot of variety tucked away beneath the surface. As a whole it's a consistent and focused album where most of the compositions keep things fairly short and to the point, relying on a strong sense of groove - both in terms of the speed and the occasional presence of some "moshy" breakdowns. There are a few fucking outstanding moments, though - such as the rare energetic bursts of more overt melody or some oddly droning/noisy lead lines… and just check out those eerie acoustic guitars that pop up out of nowhere during "Higher"!? Awesome. The recording's a tad on the muddy side, but that's not an issue - just suggestive that there's room for improvement on some level. That density keeps things punchy and in your face without obscuring any of the intricacies of the more involved riffing or the vocals - which actually have a lot of really nice texture and audible strain that makes them sound genuinely ripping. The disc is then housed in a slick looking glossy digipack with some mildly abstracted landscape photos that do sort of tie-in to the general tone of the socio-politically oriented lyrics that tackle religion, the status quo, and a general sense of doom regarding the prospects of the future. Good stuff. This is certainly the band's strongest work to date, and continues to point to bigger and better things to come, so I'll always be curious to see how everything transpires… ( www.aversionline.com )
INTO THE GORE "BUREAU OF DISGUST" CD (BB004)
( http://morethansounds.net )"Bureau of Disgust", the sophomore full-length from Into the Gore. Recorded back in 2003 but not released until sometime last year, this is also - quite sadly - the band's final release, as their co-founding guitarist/vocalist Michael-Alexander Xidas died in a motorcycle accident in the summer of 2005. Given such an intense and unfortunate end for the band, I think it's very cool that this material was still given a proper posthumous release, as these 17 tracks offer up about 33 scorching minutes of ferocious material that could firmly stand alongside most any such traditionally-based grindcore albums of the last decade (though a little more "oomph" to the recording wouldn't have hurt). No song tops three minutes and they basically rip through loads of textbook shifts between forceful growls and searing high-pitched screams over hammering, speedy blasts and churning midpaced breaks. On rare occasion they'll spice things up with a vague hint of melody or perhaps a noisier and more borderline chaotic burst, but for the most part they follow the tried and true path - and they do it just fine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? The disc is housed in a simple little die-cut sleeve (which allows the CD face to show through the front cover) printed in dark brown ink on muddy orange/brown stock with a matte finish. No lyrics are included, but despite what the band name might insinuate I get the impression that most of the lyrical content probably deals with socio-political topics - as is generally the case for all of the best that grindcore has to offer. Not too shabby, my friends… not too shabby. A damn shame they had to go out on such a tragic note… ( www.aversionline.com )
