Born in Camaguey, Cuba in 1960 Mauricio J. Rodriguez is one of the most influential bass players of his generation in Cuba. He started his studies at the age of 13 in the Provincial School of Art de Camaguey and graduated in the Center of Professional and Artistic Achievement in Camaguey. His professors include Silvio Vergara, Orstes Urfe, Rafael Lay, and Armando Romeo, who are important figures of Cuban music. Influenced by the musical movements of the 70s and 80s he had the opportunity to play different types of music, from classical to jazz. This has given him knowledge of different styles that allow him to adapt to any artistic demand. In 1989 he moved back to his hometown to work as Assistant Principal Bass, Symphony Orchestra of Camaguey, Cuba and also participates in II, IV y V National Festivals of Symphonies Orchestras; I y II National Chamber Music Festivals; I Festival of Contemporary Music, performing for the first time as a soloist Pedro Martinez Acosta's Double Bass master piece; recording of the first music production of the Camaguey’s Symphony Orchestra. At the same time Mauricio starts as a teacher of Acoustic and Electric Bass for the Center of Professional and Artistic Achievement in Camaguey. After three years of playing with the symphony, he joins Miguel Escalona’s Trio, founder of the New Trova movement in Cuba along with Pablo Milanes and Silvio Rodríguez. With the Miguel Escalona’s Trio, he is involved in many tours around the country, along with TV and radio shows. Stimulated by the jazz movement of the 80s Fervet Opus is formed, one of the most important quartets in Cuba, and as a bass player in the band Mauricio does many tours, both national and international, including presentations in I y II Camaguey Festival;. Mauricio also performed at the International Festival of Popular Music Varadero ’88; VII, VIII, IX, XI y XII Festivals Jazz Latino Plaza in Havana, Cuba. Jazz Jamboree Internationals Festivals, Bratislava y Belgrade, where also performed great artists such as Arturo Sandoval, Irakere, Gonzalo Ruvalcaba, Dizzie Guillespie, Herbie Hancock, Michael Camilo, Miles Davis, Easy Fingers, Steve Coleman, Phil Woods and more. Mauricio participated in the Cuban Artistic Delegation, which offered concerts in the Columbus Center of Madrid, Spain, in tribute to the 500-year anniversary of the discovery of America; international Guitar Festival; national Saxophone Festival.As part of Fervet Opus he does the co- production of the ballet Altazor of choreographer Lazaro Martinez, with the first dancer of ballet National of Cuba of Alicia Alonso, Jorge Esquivel and actor Adolfo Llaurado. Mauricio has also recorded music composed for Julian Blanco and Raul Noriega for Ballet and Theater. Due to his work in the music business Mauricio was also assigned the following works: Teacher and National Supervisor for the Center of Professional and Artistic Achievement in Camaguey and the eastern region of Cuba: Member of the National Evaluation Commission for professional musicians in Cuba, Technical Supervisor for the Cuban Music Institute, and Member of the evaluation jury music college students. Once he finished with the quartet Fervet Opus, Mauricio starts as a double bass of the classical string quintet "Union" of Cuba, which with he later on works for over 3 years and moves to Venezuela to finish his contract as a Master of the bass section of the Symphonic Orchestra of Aragua. During this period Mauricio does seminars where he participated as Teacher of Double Bass; composition, production and arrangement of original music performed by the Symphony Orchestra of Aragua on his Jazz Third Event; recording and concerts. Mauricio was also the Harmony Teacher of UPEL Institute Maracay, Edo. Aragua. Venezuela. He also taught Electric Bass and Double Bass, Harmony and Orchestration Seminars at the Opera Theater, Maracay. Edo. Aragua, Venezuela. He was also the Composition Teacher at IUDEM, Instituto Universitario de Estudios Musicales de Venezuela, Caracas (University Institute of Music Studies of Venezuela). In the year 2001 Mauricio moves to Tampa, where he keeps developing professionally and has worked with the band Bayside, which was the house band of Starship for over 6 years, since November the 5th 2001 until February the 2nd, 2008. He has also worked with the quintet Guisando Caliente with musicians such as Kenny Drew, Jr; John Jenkins; Frankie Pinero and Jeff Rupert, and also with Tampa Jazz Trio and with Jose Valentino's Band. He is now a co-founder of a project called ConSensualSoul and is also working on his own CD called "The Voice of my Life". He has also participated in many productions such as "Del Son al Jazz" of Gradus ad Parnassum and "My Rebirth" of Mariano Gari.
