a I edited my profile with Thomas' Myspace Editor V4.4SOULCAINE (sol-kayn): an extremely addictive stimulant derived from the roots of black music. It is most addictive in it's raw, unrefined state.I'm A.M. Johnson. I was born in Oakland, California and I was raised in Richmond, California.
Growing up, I was a shy kid with a lot on his mind and sometimes, a heavy heart. It took a while for me to find my soul, but I found it. I realized I had a love for music around the age of 10, maybe 11. As a kid, I would watch the musicians at my grandfather's church play. They were amazing to me. I'd sit, watch, and imagine that I was the drummer, though I never learned to play drums.
As I got a little older, hip hop became my external passion. But my secret passion was jazz. Secret, because there weren't a lot kids my age listening to jazz. I guess I was afraid of being seen as weird or being teased for listening to "Old people's music".
When I got my first real job, I'd spend most of my weekly paychecks on jazz and hip hop records and tapes. In a very short time, I had amassed a pretty large collection. Artists like Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, George Benson, A Tribe Called Quest, Tony Toni Tone, Bobby Hutcherson, Chick Corea, DeLa Soul, Freestyle Fellowship, Miles Davis and the list goes on and on.
I started seriously playing music at age 18 after I saw an add in the Oakland Tribune for a flute for sale. I was always in love with the sound of the flute, so I bought it.
My love and desire for music became more real than ever when I was introduced to MIDI and recording back in the early 90's by my cousin Donald Thompson (aka, PlayaRighteous). We would stay up late nights making beats and music in his garage.
Ever since then, it's been an ongoing love affair.
Music is Life, Life is Music.
