Red On Blue

About Me

Flowing melodies with dance, funk, jazz, and electro textures: this is Red On Blue. The group from Berlin brings a unique melancholic urban sound to the stage, leaving no heart untouched and no pair of feet standing still. Bernadette Kube's voice envelopes shimmering, whirring songs in a sparkling layer of cellophane, and her timbre, oscillating between glamour and pop appeal, serves as a perfect accompaniment to the intoxicating arrangements of keyboarder Frieder Schmidt and guitarist Clemens Koch. Having already made a name for herself as a jazz singer on Berlin's club scene, Kube is also Red On Blue's songwriter. Audio whiz and producer Henri Hagenow opens up a manifold electronic soundscape to the band, rounding off the tracks. All in all: Red On Blue make music that engulfs you, lifts you up, and brings you to dance. Film director Michael Schorr ("Schultze gets the Blues") was so impressed by the band, that he used the song "Saturday Night" in his new film "Schröders wunderbare Welt" ("Schröder's wonderful world"), coming to German cinemas in Spring 2007.

Bernadette Kube: Singer/Songwriter
I studied Theater and Modern German Literature in Berlin and in Paris. In 1995 I met Michael Schorr, who cast me for the role of Rina in his short student film "Silentium". In this role I had to sing a song, an experience which I immensely enjoyed. After the film project, I worked with various jazz bands in Berlin. I made another short with Michael Schorr: "Leben 1, 2, 3" ("Life1, 2, 3"). This work brought us to 2000 Cannes film festival, where it was shown in the Cinéfondation competition. In 2003 my son was born. I started writing my own songs, and founded the band Red On Blue in 2006. Michael Schorr received international acclaim for "Schulze gets the blues", and our song "Saturday night" can be heard in his latest film "Schröders wunderbare Welt"("Schröder's wonderful world").

Henri Hagenow: Producer/Sound engineering whiz
I studied Physics and Communications with a concentration in audio design and sound synthesis in Berlin. Since then I have been experimenting with integration of electronics in live music sets. To this end I founded a music label, "Brothers in Music" which, with the recording series "Klangduell", tries to bring the groove and jam of a live jazz band using electronic instruments, computers, and controllers to the club stage. I started playing in band projects when I was 17, finding the switch from bass to electronic music natural. Between 1998 and 2003 I produced a trip-pop project called "Syreen" . Under aliases "ota-q" and "headkit" I continue my search for minimal structures in electronic dance music. I have produced remixes for Ellen Allien, Beck, Thom Yorke and Troy Pierce, among others. My last production "Damero" appeared recently on the "BPitch Control" label in Berlin.

Frieder Schmidt: Compositions/Arrangements
As a child, I have always found myself gravitating towards Bill Withers, Prince, and Michael Jackson, and made my first contact with music through drumming: originally on cooking pans. When I was 12, I started taking lessons. Theory and piano training followed, and as an 18-year-old my interests shifted more and more towards making music. Since 2006 I study Jazz/Pop composition at a college in Hannover.
