The Art of Parkour and Maximizing your Body

An Introduction to David Belle : I wanted to put in a part about Parkour because this is something that has been very inspiring to me lately. For essentially 2 reasons -

1) It is combination of Dance, Martial Arts, and Skateboarding/In-Line Skating

2) The motivation and creativity of one person invented an entire international culture and sport

A little History: David Belle is a French man, born in Normandy of a Military family. His Grand-father and Father were in the French Special Forces and both were heavily involved in Search and Rescue. David was expected to follow in their footsteps, and has - not really in the traditionnall sense. From a very early age David excelled in every sport, but never stayed in the same form for very long. He found all of them very easy and became bored with practice and games quickly. During his teenage years, David started to develop his own sport, something that many of us have thought about or even jokingly practiced as we grew up. Me and my friends called it "Freestyle-Walking" and fashioned it after are days of In-Line skating. David took this idea and dedicated his mind and body just the same as a Monk would to his discipline. Influenced by his father and Grand-father, David would envision himself in impossible situations. He dreamed he would be on a mission, like his elders, and he would have to rescue someone or something, but all alone and with nothing but his wits and his body- no equipment. As his missions got grander he created a very dedicated following. Hooked on the idea that you could do so much more with your body than once thought. The Idea that you can get from Point A, say the roof of a building to Point B, say another roof 25 feet apart, with nothing more than confidence and reflexes.

Hence the literal translation of "Parkour" which means "Reach"
David Belle and the Yamakasi Parkour Crew: David Belle is now an International star. He has been in ads for Nike, Nissan, and the BBC to name a few. He starred in a recent Madonna video and even held the leading role in the 2005 action flick D-13 or District 13 about two cops (both pretty good at Martial Arts) taking down a crime boss in a compartmentalized version of Paris. My explanation isn't that great but trust me if you like action films, you should see it. The french film was a huge hit in Europe and did moderately well here especially for being subtitled. In America, the sport hasn't quite caught on yet but in Europe, all of the Gymnastics gym's are experiencing a complete revival. Due to the overwhelming demand for Parkour courses and practice, many of them are now 100% dedicated to Parkour training. There are independent crews all over Europe Asia and South America virtually unaware of each-other besides the internet, and every one of those cells are a part of the creation of a new sport. For me the attraction is strong, because there is no equipment, just you and your atmosphere, interacting. With Parkour, it seems that you slowly train your mind to perceive everything in your way as an opportunity for creativity and advancement . . .
