Influences: Beat Street - I was obsessed with this film and the music in it. Arthur Baker was the don and Sugar Hill nailed it for years. Oh, and the New York City breakers kicked ass in it too for good measure.
Sly and Robbie - incredibly talented, inventive and hard working... Sly Dunbar's heavy drums and Robbie Shakespeares tooth rattling bass drenched in crazy tape echo. The album below's awesome, simple as. They've even produced Grace Jones, Herbie Hancock and Bob Dylan! (Also check their work with Prince Jammy - crazy deep and ace)
Breakdance - A bit cheesy compared to Beat Street, but it had some awesome tunes: Aint Nobody, Tour De France, Beat Box. Some wicked poppin from Boogaloo Shrimp ;o)
Planet Rock - Just so future and will maybe remain as THE most cutting edge record made (can't dismiss Perfect Beat and Renegades Of Funk though). Could've lived without it ever being remixed though.
Mantronix - all their music was funk-filled and technical to the point of being unbelievable. It wasn't til later in life I found out the editing was done with bits of audio tape sliced and diced!
Trax Records - can't really say enough about this label and their artists, so I'm not gonna try. Some highlights for me though: Move Your Body, Dub Love, Thank Ya, No Way Back, Can You Feel It, Phuture Jacks... Almost never ending. That Larry Sherman was a strange one tho...
I'll eventually add more when I get the time... But for now, have a gander and watch this video of Sheffield old school coolness - Sheffield's Street Crew. Footage taken from the early breakin days, unearthed and lookin fresh and cool as an eskimo's toes...
