‘The Love of the Nightingale’
@St Peter’s Arts Centre, St Peter’s Square, Preston 7.30pm
Wednesday 21st – Saturday 24th February

Timberlake Wertenbaker’s rich and powerful drama is a modern retelling of a Greek myth. The play passionately reveals the violence that is created from enforced silence. This dynamic and thought provoking piece of theatre is told with shocking vitality and has contemporary resonances. Wertenbaker herself has commented that the play has often been interpreted as being about women but in fact ‘I was thinking of the violence that erupts in societies when they have been silenced for too long. Without language, brutality will triumph. I grew up in the Basque country where the language was systematically silenced, and it is something that always haunts me’. (Wertenbaker 1995)
