Poet/Playwright/Fiber Artist

About Me

Welcome!
Good to have you in my space ... I am a poet whose line breaks and stanzas hinge on sound, image and folklore. I write both in form and free verse. I am a playwright whose storylines show my poetics. I make hats and art quilts. In a previous life, I appeared on Oprah.
My first collection of poems, Utterance: A Museology of Kin, was a 2001 semi-finalist for the Kathryn A. Morton Prize in Poetry and a 2002 finalist for the Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award. My second collection, Chops (Nexus Press, 2004), won a 2005 AIGA Gold SEED Award and is housed in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art. My third collection, Exquisite Heats, will be released by UK-based Salt Publishing in 2008.
I am a Southern-born, Carolina-bred woman. I work hard, and I play hard.

The Politics of Persona

This week, it's been all about persona. I have listened in on a hot debate about the poet's rights and responsibilities as it relates to creating persona poems. To be honest, it all makes me tired as ...
