Allen Markel

I’m a recent transplant from Nyc, where I balanced Performing with Teaching. I received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance from William Paterson University. I was fortunate to study bass with Rufus Reid and Todd Coolman I also studied Latin music with Chico Mendoza. For the past 15 years I’ve has been a freelance musician performing At Nyc clubs including: CBGB’s, The Bitter End, The Bottom Line, Village Gate, Dharma, Zinc Bar. In 2005, I played on Raphael Cruz’s Cd “Bebop Timba”. This CD was nominated for a Grammy in the Latin Jazz category. Currently in Portland, I’ve been performing with 2007 Muddy Nominee’s “Kevin Selfe and the Tornadoes” and often play with power house vocalist Rae Gordon as well. I have my own project studio and like to record and produce new music. I’m currently working on a cd with Kevin Selfe. I coproduced two cds for NYC singer, songwriter Meridith Levande. I have a passion for teaching as well. I’ve taught for over 10 years and focus on becoming a well rounded Musician able to adapt to any situation. I have a Bass Instructional DVD from Millennium Interactive’s Fun to Know series. Here is a online review. Allen Markel may not seem so exciting a bass player as some of the other longer haired guys (Allen has none!) , but he teaches a great foundation for anyone who really wants to learn this instrument and become a good player. There is music notation to print out and Allen does more in-depth teaching of the basics than the other starter DVDs.
