The Maryland Mass Choir (“Unity in the Musical Community”)“Great Things” Historical Background The Maryland Mass Choir has a rich and compelling musical heritage. The dynamic, gifted and remarkably anointed Maryland Mass Choir started under the prolific and dynamic direction of Elder Duane Johnson and Will Smith. The inception of this great choir had its innovative beginning September 24, 2005. This magnificent choir was formed because it was stated that, “there was no unity especially in the gospel genre in Maryland’s music.” However, “unity” was a mandate for Minister Will Smith and he knew that exceptional results are not just accidental. God conveyed to Minister Smith the vision of a unified gospel recording in the great State of Maryland.Additionally, Minister Smith fully understood that success for this choir would require workers dedicated to the vision and application of their God-inspired knowledge and talents. The ultimate result of Minister Will Smith’s vision was the establishment of the Maryland Mass Choir where listeners will certainly hear boundless melodic ingenuity.Most memorable, however, is this extraordinary vision became a reality in the spirit of Minister Will Smith! Subsequently, Minister Smith consulted numerous musicians, singers, songwriters and choir directors to join this distinguished and anointed unified recording for the State of Maryland. Remarkably, Minister Smith used the agency of radio and telephonic methods to get the word out. The word of a “mass choir” in Maryland spread like wild fire. Thus, they convened at the Greater Bethlehem Temple (GBT) in Randallstown, Maryland. Remarkably, approximately ove seventy (70) persons from more than sixty (60) churches in the venue in and around Baltimore convened to share in this momentous event.However, after a few rehearsals at Greater Bethlehem Temple (GBT), rehearsals were relocated to Oasis Ministries, Pikesville, Maryland. Moreover, he dynamic husband and wife team, Ministers Will and Faith Smith, became overseers of the project. Further, the group continued to bond through the anointing and awesome power of the Holy Spirit. Supernaturally, each rehearsal increased in the anointing and worship in the beauty of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.God has graciously gifted various members of the choir with prolific songwriting skills, therefore, resulting in the choir having all original songs.The magnificent celebration of two months of rehearsing was crowned with the Maryland Mass Choir’s “live recording” of “Great Things” on November 19, 2005 at Israel Baptist Church, Baltimore, Maryland. To God be all the glory and praise!The journey has not been easy; many of those original members who started out with MMC have moved on to fulfill God’s purpose in their personal, or professional ministries. Some plant seed, and some water, however, it has been a joyous and uncompromising season. The classic blessing for this distinguished choir is that they hold “elite status” of “national notoriety” -- all because of the favor and blessings of God. Within the short span of time the choir has been organized this talented group of people have been recognized throughout the Baltimore metropolitan area, and the District of Columbia. The notoriety of this anointed choir is forever expanding and evolving. The Maryland Mass Choir was the first local artist to headline on the illustrious stage of the historical Hippodrome Theater. They have appeared on several local television programs, and have ministered in song in many of the area churches. The choir believes in going wherever ministry is needed. This charismatic choir has shared the stage alongside some of the music industry’s finest i.e., Peabo Bryson, Stephanie Mills, James Ingram and Deniece Williams are just a few of the names with many, many more to follow.
