"Grandpa's hands never worked quite right,
They'd still shake, no matter how tight he'd hold the bottle.
I never saw him wear his wedding band,
But I've seen him sweat and swear, his tattooed hand fight with the bottle..."
(Grandpa's Hands/Rollin' This Way written by Alix Wilson Brown)
People say that I have the genuineness of Stevie Nicks, the tell-it-like-it-is of Loretta Lynn, the drive of Avril Lavigne, and the creativity of Sheryl Crow and Jewel. But the best part is, I’m myself, and that speaks louder than any comparisons.
I’m a farm girl, and growing up everything around me was an art form. From the Catskill Mountains around us in the country side of upstate New York, to the Morgan horses we raised on our farm, it was as real as life gets. So when it came to music, it was very natural for me.
It all started with the inspiration of my adopted grandfather who came to visit us from Alabama with his old Sears guitar when I was fifteen. He was playing classic country music. Before he left he said, "Girl, listen to this." He handed me a tape that had nothing but Hank Williams Sr. songs on it. So when I picked up my mom’s guitar, those songs were the first songs I started playing. He had made music very tangible for me. Soon I began writing my own songs, while playing the guitar until my fingers were exhausted. I filled up notebook after notebook. I couldn’t get enough of music, and I still can’t. My dad taught me the violin, and I also picked up the bagpipes and the banjo. My brother plays the bass and lead guitar, so we play together at local functions, in church, as well as just jamming at home, because music is what we love to do, and we’ll do it anywhere. Crossing borders into older music and to cutting edge, we’re on it, while remaining true to ourselves.
What makes me different? Why should you listen to my music? Because I am different. I’m not intimidated by playing and writing good music. There are three things I have that a lot of other artists starting out don’t have:
1) I can easily blend with others, and I also set myself apart. I’m real, my music is real and it’s something anyone willing to listen can relate to. I have a distinctive melody and bridge in my songs, as stated by NSAI, and my themes are such that people can relate with them.
2) I have heart. Surviving farm life is hard, and it has given me heart and the will power to achieve what might seem too out of reach for others.
3) If you turn a critical ear to my music, no matter what genre one is biased of, there’s one thing you can’t deny, and that’s my honesty. I’m not afraid to take constructive criticism, I’m not afraid to change for the better if I need to because I know I will only get better. But in everything I do I’m honest, genuine, and well grounded in what’s real and what I believe...and that’s what makes good music that only gets better.
