Our story opens at the FBI Field Office down by the Pony Pasture Rapids in Richmond, Virginia...headquarters of the missing person’s task force. Ten years ago, in the sleepy little town of Burden, about 30 miles west of Richmond, a series of baffling abductions took place. The FBI sent in their best; Special Agent in-charge, Sam Marra and his team stepped up. An exhausting and thorough investigation ensued, and after several months Marra appeared to be closing in. Then suddenly, almost mockingly, the trail went completely cold...the evidence created to deceive...Agent Marra had been brilliantly misdirected. Mysteriously, the abductions ceased....almost as if the purpose of the hideous crimes had been to humiliate Sam. He was asked to step aside...and reluctantly walked away.
Neither the perpetrator, nor the victims were ever found. The vivid memory and humiliation of that experience have been Sam’s ever-present companions for a decade now, a sense of defeat and of things left undone permeating every aspect of his life...Its not that anyone questions whether Sam is a good man, or a competent agent, but since the Burden case, Sam has been different man...As fate would have it though, Sam will get another chance...it could be his last.
