Anything with an important message and purpose, especially that which uplifts us no matter our gender
BASIC HISTORY summarized, but not detailed:* Onion Carrillo, in the summer of 2002, as member of CARA’s Youth Project and part of CARA’s Community Action Team (CAT), founded LADIES FIRST with her understanding and love of hip hop and being part of that community connected the principles she learned and taught herself through CARA established the first ladies first. Her vision of anti-rape in the context of her culture and her involvement within the hiphop community. There were a series at Lottie Motts Café on Ferdinand and Rainier in Columbia City. Project Name was “Giving Birth 2 New Roots.†It was addressing the “problems facing your community of young people†through a project. She estimated the cost to be $20.00 and this legacy continues, because we are still attempting to understand safe and sacred places and attempting to feel comfortable in our colonized bodies in order to create art* There were many more women who made Ladies First possible after Onion proposed it officially. Not all of them were young women. They couldn't have done it with out the wisdom of women who were well into their 50s coming to the events. People include: Negesti Abechi, Wanda Brown, Amanda Combow, Jay, Michelle Mukai, Cyreeta, Renne, Sara Ramos, Carmel Bias, and more CARA staff.* Onion Carrillo, re-established/re-launched “Ladies First†Spring 2007 first at Re-Bar for the first show after she was inspired by being the Lead organizer for INDAYOG (all women’s hip hop show Dec. 7, 2006) with Katrina Pestano of Pinay sa Seattle and support of various communities and community members. INDAYOG was supported/sponsored by CARA through its 501(c)3 status. There was a need to carry on the work she started years ago. She then brought it to the Central District at Hidmo Eritrean Cuisine with the support of its owner Rahwa Ogbe Habte, who gave a free space, because she believed in what Onion was creating and was also a member of the hiphop community and wanted a space for women to be “safe†and practice their craft. * Gigi Frazier, during the Spring of 2007 as an AmeriCorps Vista* volunteer (1st ever at CARA) carried on the project with the support Sylva Jones, Co-Director of Seattle Young People’s Project (SYPP) and involved in CARA’s Black People’s Project. Both Gigi and Sylva believed in its creation and sustainability and its need. * Luzviminda U. Carpenter, during the Fall of 2007, carried on the work as an unemployed person and best friend of Hidmo owner, Rahwa O. Habte. Habte wanted to carry on the energy of Ladies First, so she contacted Eboni Colber, Co-Director of CARA to re-establish and placed Carpenter in charge as the Programmer/Hustler of Hidmo Entertainment (basically, Lulu brings business/dollars from grassroots organizations that Rahwa supports missions of) * Hidmo Eritrean Cuisine Restaurant offers free space, estamatied cost ______ . * B-Girl Bench, DJ B-Girl/Mia, jumps on board and an alliance is formed and Ladies First supports them and their creation * KBCS 91.3 FM Community Radio, Sabrina Roach as Community Outreach Coordinator, offers Ladies First $1,000 * Community partners, like Pinay sa Seattle, Seattle Young People’s Project, Youth Speak, continues to support as individual members and as organizations * Ladies First get mentioned around various communities as a women of color and queer friendly space
