About Me
I was born in Glendale as Candace Lorraine Hilchey.
My father Gene L Hilchey worked for the motion picture industry all my life. It was fun watching movies being made and running around the studios unattended.I was introduced to many movie stars, and when the Hollywood museum was going to be built across from the Hollywood Bowl (1960's), Dad took me to the ground breaking where he was awarded for his work in the industry "Special Effects and Prop Making were his specialities.
Dads shop Dial Effects Studio was listed on the Hollywood Directory for many years. Dial Effects logo was a picture of a giant telephone with my brother Dave, & sister Kristeen on either end, holding up the receiver & Candy (me) in the middle, I was only five years old @ the time the picture was taken.
My brother Dave Hilchey, is Captain Dave's Maritime Service currently works in the movie industry and has for many years. Dave can be reached at (562) 437-4772.
The band TLC is well known for their Waterfalls video where Dave is the one who rigged the water effects.
Contact Dave for all your video special effects and TV commercials.
My grandfather Bill Hilchey "ENTERPRISES" at 5225 Sunset Hollywood 27,Calif. could be reached at OLympia 3666.
Music and motion pictures were his life. Rent Sound Lights, Stages. Recording and Photo Studios. "Bill Hilchey, The Party Man offered Dance Party Service In Your Home or Club". Planned musical programs for Dances- Weddings- Picnics.
Grandpa had another shop on the right hand side of La Brea after turning left off Hollywood, Blvd., that funny little purple building set back where he kept his search lights, painted Red White, & Blue. Grandpa Bill could always be found at the Red Carpet events running his search lights, from as far back as the 1920's.
My goals in life were, & still are Music, Photography and Art.
I took piano lessons every week from the age of five and mastered an old fashioned concert organ, nothing was automatic. I have one studio recording @ Whitney in Glendale of Classical Music at age nine. There were two rooms of instruments hooked up to this four key board organ as well as base peddles. It was a very exciting time for me, and My music teacher Kenneth Howell put a poster size picture of me playing the keyboards that day in his studio on Brand BLVD. in Glendale,Ca 1965.
John Hampton used to own this place and show Silent Movies, my father and I went there every Friday Night. At the age of 16 I started dating RON D'ANDREA. My parents were against our relationship. Ron was twenty years older.
I took a job as a photographer in San Francisco at National Photography INC. to try to forget him, but love had a hold of me.
September 9,1974 Ron and I were married in Long Beach.
My career was now a housewife and soon I gave birth to a son, then a daughter. Nothing in this life is as precious as your own children.
Dobbs, former owner of Raji's Nightclub was our neighbor in 1976 and drove a taxi cab in L.A. Who would have thought he would be my co- worker @ the Cathay De Grande years later, and then owner of Raji's.
October 31,1980 my husband left and I never heard from him again. We didn't even have an arguement. He abandoned his family, and I never knew why. We had a good marriage and he just disappeared. I always thought he went back to Italy where his family was from, nevertheless I found out he was in Orange County 2006. He was a wonderful man but to some very dangerous, and I believe it was his life style that led him away to protect us.
I know he loved us dearly and spoiled me rotten. Ron was very good to me, when we were together. I will always love him. Believing Ron would come back I never got a divorce.
Last year I received a letter from Social Security that he passed away in February 2006.Leaving so many questions unanswered.Going back to 1973 I dropped out of High school to work for National Photography in San Fransisco.
Then with Rons disapearance, I needed a job, and an education. In 1982 I registered for L.A.Valley College.
I wanted to work in the Arts Industry, music, motion pictures...Life is too short to get stuck in a job you do not like.
I took a two year occupational degree for stage. I was a theatre arts major. Stage make up, costuming, stage craft were some of my favorite classes.
Lab classes after hours were theatre productions.
I pulled a 3.0 the first semester and 3.6 the second.
Made a lot of friends, and my oldest friend Dawn Mc Kennon was there (we grew up together), and she was a theatre arts major as well. She told everyone I was her big sister because we had been friends since she was nine years old.Dawn was responsible for taking me to the Cathay De Grande, she introduced me to Top Jimmy, John Doe and Exene just to name a few.Although the first time we went with Scott Mayor and Gregg Shaffer we did not go inside because the L.A.P.D. were outside, dressed in BDU's with their riot mask on, shields, and billy clubs in hand keeping everyone out!
After the initial shock of L.A.P.D.'s invasion we went back again and again.Downstairs bartender was my old neighbor and friend Dobbs.
The Cathay became my home away from home.
After college I landed a job in Tujunga at Canyon Enterprises, we made leather tour books for musicians, spike belts, bracelets and wallets with the Harley Davidson logo. After work I would make dinner for my children, take them to my mothers for the night and head out to the Cathay De Grande, The Palace, Seven Seas, The Palladium, Wriss Millers Country Club, or where ever there was music playing I liked. After a couple years at the Cathay, English Frank left Mike B. wanted me to fill his position as music promoter for the club, I accepted. It was a lot of work and I enjoyed it.
The biggest problem was with L.A.P.D. and the neighbors, who complained about the people outside all time, peeing on their building and leaving trash.Under age kids, sneaking beer inside got us closed down.
Top Jimmy was tending the upstairs bar one night when undercover cops threw down their badges to him when a twenty year old girl took a sip of someones beer at the bar.
That was our first violation, no booze could be sold for two weeks and a $500. fine to each Jimmy and Mike.
That really hurt and soon another bust.
The Zero One was having trouble as well.John Pochno and I went to the club one night and when we got there at least twenty people were face down on Vine street. John was very upset, and soon that one closed just like the one on Wilcox.
When the Cathay De Grande closed I was out of a job.
Dobbs opened Raji's on Hollywood BLVD. around the corner.
I worked a couple union jobs as professional stage make up artist, for two movies, Savage Streets and a documentary where I applied make up to over 40 actors in punk rock style, where I received screen credit.
Scott Mayor, a friend of mine from Valley College played a major role in Savage Streets and we attended the premier together on Hollywood BLVD.
In 1990 I moved to N. California to live @ my families 135 acre ranch in Cottonwood and became a cattle rancher.
Because of my sucess in the beef cattle industry my parents gave me the ranch for my birthday present in 1993. It is very hard physical work and
it was fun. I also spent a lot of time with my children who were growing up fast. My son Rocky rode in the high school rodeo and later in the professional rodeo, riding big bulls. That is when I met John Growney. John raises bulls for the rodeo and stared in a movie called "Eight Seconds" where he played himself. We all went to the movie premiere together in Red Bluff.
In 1993 a greedy land developer along with a couple local nut jobs had been trying to buy our ranch which was given to me on my birthday in April. It was not for sale! These idiots blocked the dirt road into my ranch and hid in the bushes with guns and tried to shoot us. One of them looked me in the eye pointed the gun at me and fired! MISSED ME HA HA, I'm from L.A. and I don't scare easily. The attackers were rushed, beat up and disarmed! But they were able to lie under oathe in court and have my road cut off.
Nothing in our legal systen says they can do this but they have, and I have spent thousands of dollars in court to stop this lunacy. I am told I have to build a bridge and access my property from Bowman road. A half mile from my house, So now I want to build a private Country Club for musicians and have helicopter access only. Since the county does not want me to be able to drive into my property, I do not care...AND They can all stay OUT!
Meanwhile back to my bio...
Despite the problems with idiots, I managed to raise my teenagers into adults who are well established in the community and both own their own houses.
They both graduated High School, attended college and married. My son Rocky has been on a union job for the last 12 years, married his high school sweet heart Theresa Bush, and they are the proud parents of two boys Denny and Dominic.
My daughter Lisa Marie is on her second marriage and has three children, Sarah, Soriah & Joey.
Lisa runs a home based business, goes to college full time and still finds time to cook and be a housewife.
